Unions Scold School For Not Celebrating Cop Killer

A group of unions in California have gotten together to criticize the Oakland Unified School District for refusing to allow a lesson plan to appear on its website that compares murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal to civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The “Urban Dreams” lesson plan tells students to “critically examine a possible parallel between Martin Luther King, Jr., and someone else many believe is currently targeted by the U.S. government, Mumia Abu-Jamal.”

The Oakland school district decided to jettison the lesson plan because it lionized a cop killer and criticized the police. Its comparison of the murderer to King was especially galling.

But the unions had an opposing opinion on the efficacy of a lesson plan that celebrates a murderer as someone “just like” beloved civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

On July 14, the Alameda Labor Council condemned the Oakland school district by passing a resolution insisting that the lesson plan was good for kids because it was an attack on the police and Fox News.

As EAGNews reported, The AFL-CIO affiliated Alameda Labor Council is an umbrella organization that coordinates the political activities of more than 100 unions, including the Berkley Federation of Teachers and the California School Employees Association.

Despite the facts of the case and like many extreme leftists, this union group insists that murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal is innocent of murdering a police office in Philadelphia in 1981.

The union group claims that the lesson plan is “invaluable” for teaching students to think critically about “social justice.”

The widow of the man murdered by Abu-Jamal, officer Danny Faulkner, said the lesson plan was disgraceful for comparing a murderer to the beloved civil rights leader.

“It’s a travesty,” Maureen Faulkner, told Fox News in April. “You’re going to teach children about a man who murdered a police officer? That’s not a good lesson to be teaching children. He was a radical, a militant. My question is: Are our tax dollars paying for this?”

In its outrageous resolution, the union claims that the murderer Abu-Jamal is a “defender of the rights of the working class, people of color, and oppressed people.”
