Tzedekah is a very important pillar of Judaism — people are encouraged and required under the tenets of Judaism to give charity. So whether its donating a car to Kars 4 Kids or the American Red Cross who gives the most donations:
- Generally, Republicans give more than twice what Democrats give in charitable contributions of all sorts. In 2008 a book was written which showed that while Democrats have higher household incomes, Republicans tend to donate more monies.
- The Chronicle of Philanthropy had a survey which shows that religious people of all sorts tithe due to their religious beliefs – and then thereafter donation trends change.
o The most generous state in the country is Utah – where households in Provo, Utah, give away the most as a percentage — 13.9% of discretionary income. In second-place amongst states is Mississippi at 7.2%. Of course, Mormans “headquarters” is in Utah – and like Mitt Romney they tend to give generously to the Morman Church.
o The others in the top five aren’t Morman heavy states – but are heavy evangelical places - Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina.
One wonders indeed which party is the true kinder gentler party. Giving is good for you.
