BREAKING: SYRIA USES CHEMICAL WEAPONS. Does this MEAN WAR?

Back in August of 2012, Barack Obama said,

“We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation…We’re monitoring that situation very carefully. We have put together a range of contingency plans.”

Well, that red line has now been crossed.

The British, French, and Israelis are all saying that Syria has used chemical weapons and Obama’s Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel largely seems to agree.

“Our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin. It violates every convention of warfare.”

Since Obama has publicly called this a “red line” act by Syria, it seems likely that this will mean American boots on the ground in that country as part of some larger coalition.

Here’s an alternate suggestion: Let’s not do that. There is not a thing in that entire lousy pesthole of a nation that’s worth the life of one American soldier. So for once, why don’t we let others save the day so the Syrians can hate their guts for it? Let’s let some other nation experience the “joy” of being the hero and being hit with scorn, disdain and complete ingratitude in return. If we want to “help,” give the Syrian rebels money and weapons and wish them well.
