Even one of the most repressive, sadomasochistic dictators ever can find mascots in the shameful American elite liberal establishment.

Via Vlad Tepes: “Sky TV: United Nations Watch Reports on Syria’s “Grotesque” Human Rights abuses and slams world inaction”

Sky TV has recently become the only western news agency to get video images of Syrian government atrocities against its own people, including children who have been shot down on the streets.:  : Here is my earlier report from them.: :  This weekend, SKY TV carried harsh criticism of: President Bashar Al: Assad’s : regime:  from two close observers of the bloodshed.

Indeed, why should France give red carpet treatment to Mrs. Assad’s shopping binges? Mrs. Sarkozy, are you reading this?

Of course, it doesn’t help the cause of human rights one whit when you have major American personalities, such as Vogue Magazine editor Anna Wintour,:  former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and a sitting U.S. Congressman, Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) willing to put blinders on and defend bloody dictators.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) meets with Syrian President Assad June 27, 2011

In the midst of unprecedented jailings, torture and murder of his own people, Democrat Kucinich:  travelled to Damascus for a meeting with President Assad, and praised him.: : : :  Embarrassed by the criticism later, the ‘useful idiot’:  Kucinich then said he was “misquoted” in Syria.

“His visit to Damascus this week got off to a predictable start. After meeting with a group of hand-picked local journalists earlier this week, the state news agency quoted Mr. Kucinich as saying Assad “is highly loved and appreciated by the Syrians” and that Assad “cares so much about what is taking place in Syria, which is evident in his effort towards a new Syria and everybody who meets him can be certain of this.”

Kucinich responded by issuing a statement that he was “misquoted” and it’s certainly hard to imagine the “highly loved” comment having come out of his mouth, whatever his political views. But he has frequently in recent months expressed confidence in Assad, and even after having words put in his mouth by what amounts to a regime mouthpiece, he is willing to give Assad the benefit of the doubt.”

Listen to this video. Kucinich is not misquoted.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also brazenly committed treason in 2007 and confounded Israeli officials with a rogue trip to Syria. She even deferentially “submitted” by wearing a Muslim hijab and then gilded the bloody Assad’s record:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wears hijab in Syria

“Defying the White House’s Middle East policy by meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Pelosi said, “The road to Damascus is a road to peace.”

After meeting for three hours with Assad on Wednesday, the House speaker announced that the Syrian president is “ready to engage in negotiations for peace with Israel.”

Muna Khan at Al Arabiya points out the hypocrisy of high-brow Vogue Magazine in the Syrian human rights crisis. The glossy fashion publication in March did a complimentary puffball feature story glamorizing Bashar Al-Assad’s wife, Asma, as a “young and fresh-faced” “rose” in the desert” Her husband the president was by then undertaking a brutal repression of democracy protesters, ordering his troops to jail, torture, and kill thousands of his own civilians, including children.

“Mrs. Al Assad was described as the “freshest and most magnetic of first ladies” whose mission was to “change the mindset of six million Syrians under 18, encourage them to engage in active citizenship.”

Why would the queen allow a visit from the Assads?

After the glowing feature story ran with Al-Assad family photos, there was a hailstorm of criticism from human rights activists worldwide. Vogue has now removed the story from online viewing, but defends the story.

Khan writes:

Asma Assad -- glamour photo from Vogue, brags about her "democratic" husband.

: “The only democratic principles the Assads have can be found in the household, which Mrs. Assad says in Vogue, “is run on wildly democratic principles… We all vote on what we want and where.”

Sadly the same cannot be said for the Syrians she so valiantly champions in the few statements she makes about them. How the mighty have fallen–both the Assads whose time will eventually come to a close and Vogue, which doesn’t have the chutzpah to stand by its editorial decisions, foolish as they are.”

It is time for more than lip service with regard Syria. No one is interested in prosecuting yet another war in Syria. However, extra measures to bring economic pressure, dishonor, and responsibility for crimes against humanity would be a good start. Barring western doors to the Marie-Antoinette-clone Asma Assad is the first thing to do.
