Ted Stevens Should Resign

Even before yesterday, Ted Stevens was generally considered by most conservatives to be too corrupt, too out of it, and too much of an appropriator to be an effective senator. But now, it has gotten even worse,

Veteran Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens was charged on Tuesday with concealing more than $250,000 worth of gifts, including home renovations, that he received from an Alaska oil services company, the Justice Department said.

The Alaska politician, who has served 40 years in the Senate, was charged in a federal grand jury indictment with seven counts of making false statements on his Senate financial disclosure forms from 2001 to 2006, the department said.

Simply put: Ted Stevens needs to go. The Republican leadership in the Senate should be saying that, conservative talk show hosts should be saying that, and conservative bloggers should be saying that.

If Stevens won’t do the right thing and resign, then we should raise money for his strongest primary opponent, Dave Cuddy, to help him put Stevens out to pasture.

I am not 100% pleased with Cuddy — he’s a little bit too much of a Libertarian to make me entirely happy — but he would certainly be far superior to a mediocrity like Ted Stevens who has stayed in office for over 40 years by bribing his constituents with our tax dollars.

With that in mind, I am now going to raise money for Cuddy over at Slatecard in hopes that he can knock Stevens off when the August 26 primary vote rolls around. So, let’s start taking our party back one candidate at a time by chipping in a few bucks to Cuddy. Getting rid of Ted Stevens won’t fix every problem we have in the Senate, but it would be a hell of a good start.
