On Thursday of last week, I wrote a post complaining that The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 19th Annual Legislative Conference was scheduled to begin today and there were exactly 2 Republican Congressmen and no senators scheduled to attend.
Now, how much sense does this make, folks? Everybody knows the GOP is losing Hispanics to the Dems by a better than 2-to-1 margin, so that means we need to be working harder than the Democrats to reach out. And could there be a better place on earth for the GOP to do outreach than at events run by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce? Where else is the GOP going to find that many Hispanic Americans, many of whom are probably leaders in their communities, who are likely to be favorably inclined towards the Republican Party? In fact, would anybody be surprised if there are more Republicans attending the event than Democrats? Yet, the Democrats have twenty Senators showing up and the GOP has zero.
This is a big part of the GOP’s problem with minority outreach: the Democrats show up at events like this with bells on while the Republicans can’t even be bothered to drop in and say “hello” to a friendly crowd.
That post? I was told it made the rounds both at the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and in Congress. The results?
Well, according to their list of keynote speakers, the following Republicans are now attending,
Senator Lamar Alexander [R-TN]
Senator Johnny Isakson [R-GA]
Senator Mel Martinez [R-FL]
Senator Orrin Hatch [R-UT]
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison [R-TX]
Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart
Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart
Congressman Mike Pence
The GOP is still outnumbered by the Democrats at the event, but at least we have a significant presence there now. That’s a big improvement over where we were last week when the GOP, except for the Diaz-Balart brothers, looked to be on track to blow the event off completely.
PS: I have in a request with The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s press representative to see if there are any other Republicans who aren’t listed that are attending and I’d welcome any emails from staffers whose bosses are going as well.
