NASCAR Metaphor Stumps ABC

If you’ve never watched a NASCAR race and made the comment that you were surprised the drivers stayed Republican because they make nothing but left turns, you’re not a redneck, probably have never voted Republican in your life and live at least out of the broadcasting range of a country music station (meaning you’re either in the media or live on a coast).

Which would explain why ABC news thought Fred Thompson was eluding to a complex commentary on stock car racing with this:

“It’s like they’re all in training for the NASCAR, you know, nothing but a left turn, just steady as she goes, all the way around,” he said at a coffee house in northeastern Iowa. “And they’re going to wind up kinda where they started from, too, like the George McGovern days, some of them driving a little faster than the others, but they’re all going in the same direction.”

Granted thats a far more complex metaphor than we would typically make, but ABC assumed that Fred was disparaging NASCAR drivers, not the candidates themselves, and followed the quote up with an exclamation that, “Thompson, the former Tennessee senator, or other Republican candidates have anything against stock car racing or the NASCAR circuit.”

Thompson also maintained that reporters would probably have to explain NASCAR to other Republican candidates (though thats probably not true any longer with Rudy), making him the second official candidate to pander for the stock car circuit endorsement.
