Father-of-three wrongfully imprisoned for 23 years after being framed for murder by rogue detective gets $6.4 million settlement

Justice may come late, but for this father of three who was jailed for 23 years, it did come:

A father-of-three who was wrongfully imprisoned for 23 years after being framed for murder by a rogue detective has reached a $6.4 million settlement with New York City.

David Ranta, 59, was freed last year after being jailed for the 1990 shooting of a Brooklyn rabbi.

On his release, he filed a $150 million claim that was settled before it even reached the city’s legal department – a decision that apparently acknowledges the overwhelming evidence the city faced.

It looks like the detective who investigated the case decided to throw Ranta to the wolves regardless of the facts. And while Ranta was no saint — he had a criminal record — he was no murderer, either. The Daily Mail reports that retired detective Louis Scarcella manipulated and abused the system in numerous ways to send Ranta to prison.

Fortunately, things tend to right themselves. Louis Scarcella, is under investigation, and Ranta can finally be with his family (a member of whom he is with in the picture above). As one commenter below The Daily Mail’s article noted, though, it’s not all good news. It looks like the taxpayers are getting hit twice: Once by Scarcella, who forced Ranta to be under taxpayer lock and key, and now by the settlement.
