Chris Christie’s Awesome Week
For a guy who’s “not running” for president Chris Christie is making all the right moves. New Jersey’s rock-star governor is on fire, raising money for national candidates, thrilling crowds from Iowa to California, standing up to the teachers union (while still being firmly committed to public education), and keeping his promises to eliminate wasteful government spending.
The defenders of the status quo still don’t quite know what to make of him. Surely he wouldn’t really pull the plug on the largest public works project in our state’s history? But pull it he did, and the hand wringing is in full swing. Unable to sway him on the specious merits of a tunnel to nowhere they’re reduced to whining about losing 6,000 potential
construction jobs.
Hmm, let’s see. $8.7 billion divided by 6,000 jobs equals $1.45 million per job. Obamanomics at its finest!
Chris Christie’s style is blunt. Which is a refreshing change from the spinmeisters who comprise our entrenched political class. But sometimes even a good swift kick in the keister doesn’t send his message home. Just ask the commissioners of the Delaware River Port Authority. Christie told them in no uncertain terms to end their profligate ways. What did they do? Voted themselves another big perk (free E-Z Pass rides), that’s what they did.
And then they found out why you don’t tug on Superman’s cape. Governor Awesome vetoed their meeting minutes effectively shutting them down until they see the light.
You know, as much as a lot of you guys would like Chris Christie to run for president in 2012, I’m not sure we’re ready to let you have him yet. There’s still a lot of work to be done here in New Jersey and right now he’s on a roll.
But thanks for noticing that things are finally looking up in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey.
