Atheists Lose Battle To Remove “In God We Trust” From U.S. Currency

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York rejected the arguments of an atheist group[1] that wants “In God We Trust” removed from U.S. currency.

[2]The plaintiffs claimed that being forced to carry around money with the motto violates their Constitutional rights. In a nutshell, the court dismissed their complaints as much ado about nothing.

The plaintiffs, a group that included humanists and minor children, argued before a federal appeals court that the words amount to a government endorsement of religion, disallowed by the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. They further held that, forced to carry around a religious statement in their pockets and pocketbooks, their constitutionally guaranteed right to freely exercise religion is being violated.

But the three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York noted that the courts have long looked at the motto not so much as the entanglement of government in religion, but as a more general statement of optimism and a “reference to the country’s religious heritage.”

Is it just me, or do these people sound alarmingly petty? No one is forcing them to read the Bible or attend church. Although their new thing is to portray themselves as an oppressed minority, if atheists were actually being oppressed in this country, they’d:  have bigger fish to fry. This isn’t exactly the new Salem Witch Trials.

I think the best-ever response to atheist whines came from Maddox, author of “The Best Page in the Universe” and creator of the image above. Way back in 2003, when atheist Michael Newdow sued over the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance, Maddox responded with…this[3]. Brilliant. (Warning: NSFW.)
