Can We Choose A Candidate Other Than Mark Or Jenny Sanford To Fill Tim Scott’s House Seat?

Nikki Haley made the right call when she appointed Tim Scott to be Jim DeMint’s replacement in the Senate. However, that now means his House seat is open and will be filled in a special election. The good news is that the seat is in a strong Republican district; so we don’t have to worry about losing it. The bad news is that it may become immersed in the Sanford family’s melodrama.

The Republican primary to replace Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) could pit former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford against his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford.

Scott was tapped by Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to replace resigning Sen. Jim DeMint (R). That means a special election for Scott’s House seat will take place in 2013.

Jenny Sanford was on Haley’s Senate short list, and Roll Call reports that she is considering a House bid. But so is her former husband, who famously admitted to a love affair with an Argentinian woman. (He and his former mistress are now engaged.)

This is not the Democratic Party.

Sanford got caught cheating on his wife, he dumped her and he’s now engaged to his mistress. That didn’t happen 20 years ago; it happened in 2009.

We’re the party that’s supposed to frown on that sort of thing.

As to Jenny Sanford, what happened to her was awful and I’m sure she’s a very nice lady, but she’s never held elected office before and the only reason she’d have any chance to win would be because people feel sorry for her.

Neither one of them should be running for the seat and if both of them were to run, it would turn into a bizarre sideshow spectacle.

Please, please, please spare us that whole sideshow.
