John Hawkins A Messaging Idea For The Republicans In Congress

Last night, I was talking with a buddy of mine who's a Senate aide and I gave him a suggestion that I think would do the GOP a lot of good. Over the course of the next year or so, they should have every senator cut a handful of short, casual videos about conservative principles. Execution wise, it could be something like this video from Tom Tancredo, which I considered to be one of The 10 Most Memorable Political Campaign Videos Of 2007.

What does this do for the GOP?

#1) It makes them appear technologically savvy.

#2) It helps these senators inform their constituents about what they believe.

#3) It helps the GOP explain conservative principles to independents who may not fully grasp our ideas yet.

#4) It would really help reach out to the base. After all, even moderate Republicans like Susan Collins and Arlen Specter have a lot of conservative issues that they buy into. So, by explaining what they do believe in, they're emphasizing areas of agreement instead of allowing every interaction between the base and the Senate GOP to be about disagreements.

For example, let's say Lindsey Graham cut an outstanding one minute long video on 2nd Amendment rights that got picked up all over the blogosphere. How could that do anything but help him and the GOP?

Long story short: this is easy to do, doesn't cost much, won't take a lot of preparation, can generate buzz, and has an excellent upside.

PS: This suggestion was made with the Senate in mind, but it would work just as well with the House Republicans.
