Michael Illions Remembering the 1980 USA Hockey Team

It was 28 years ago today that the USA Hockey Team, and back then, it was college kids playing, not today's "dream team" concoctions that never win, shocked the world.

The USA Hockey Team defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 in Lake Placid to advance to the Gold Medal game, which they won against Finland.

In 1980, Jimmy Carter was the President, the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan just 2 months earlier and morale in the USA was low. The game itself became a political statement as one telegram to the team from a woman in Texas read:

I may not know anything about hockey but I want you guys to go out and kill those Commie Bastards.

It was one of the greatest moments in sports and one of our Countries proudest, so let's remember the "Miracle on Ice"
