John Hawkins Q&A Friday #75: Ron Paul's 3rd Quarter Fundraising

Question: "Ron Paul's presidential campaign raised more than $5 million this past quarter. That puts him ahead of all other "second-tier candidates" and is pretty comparable to the amount raised by John McCain, who's also about $2 million in debt. What do you make of that?" -- maledicta

Answer: On the upside, that means his supporters have less money to spend on Truther conventions and to donate to the Libertarian candidate for President in 2008. On the downside, I suspect this will probably be enough of an accomplishment to get Ron Paul a speaking spot at the RNC Convention in 2008. Ugh!

PS: You may be wondering if this fundraising burst changes anything as far as Ron Paul's chances of getting the nomination are concerned. The answer is, "no." He's still sitting at about 2% in the polls, he doesn't seem to be making any significant inroads with conservatives, and he alienates so many different groups of Republicans in one form or fashion that he's not ever going to be capable of getting out of single digits nationally in the primaries.
