John Hawkins The First Quarter Fund Raising Numbers Show That McCain-Feingold Is A Failure

Let's see. In the first quarter of 1999, George Bush raised $7.6 million, Phil Gramm raised $8.7 million, and Al Gore raised $8.9 million. The Gore and Gramm numbers were all-time first quarter records until the first quarter of 2007 in which,

Hillary Clinton raised $26 million
Barrack Obama raised an estimated $22 million
Mitt Romney raised $21 million
Rudy Giuliani raised $15 million
John Edwards raised $14 million
John McCain raised $13 million
Bill Richardson raised $6 million

Remember when they were billing McCain-Feingold as a way of, "getting the money out of politics?" Boy, that really worked out well, didn't it? They subverted the First Amendment, added lots of complicated new regulations, threatened to regulate the blogosphere and for what? Not only is the system more "money-centric" than ever, but because a lot of money has been driven away from the political parties and to outside groups like MoveOn, there is less accountability than ever for ads that are run.

These numbers are just one more piece of evidence that shows that McCain-Feingold was a complete and utter failure.
