John Hawkins The Scooter Libby Verdict

In one minute, they're supposed to announce the verdict of the Scooter Libby trial. I won't be liveblogging it (nothing much to liveblog really), but I will be posting the verdict and then punching up a post on it.

C'mon, Scooter! I'm rooting for you!

Update #1: Guilty on 4 of 5 counts according to Fox.

Update #2: I'm going to leave the legal analysis to the multitude of lawyers in the blogosphere, but let me say this: there's a lot of troubling things about this case.

We now know that Joe Wilson lied about a lot of things and there shouldn't have ever been a special prosecutor appointed, since there was no underlying crime. Additionally, it does seem plausible that a guy as busy as Libby wouldn't remember where he heard Plame's name. Combine that with the really stupid questions the jury was asking, the way this trial has been heavily politicized on the left, and how liberal DC is, and you've really got to wonder how fair this trial was for Scooter Libby.

Still, the verdict is what it is, and it looks like Scooter's going to jail unless he can win on appeal. The best case for Scooter in that scenario would be to hope that he can stay out of jail while he's waiting for the appeal. Then, if he's convicted, his last hope will be for Bush to pardon him right before he leaves office, which could be possible given the circumstances.

I'm still rooting for the guy, because I have real doubts about his guilt, but there's not much to do about it at this point except wait and see how it plays out.
