Kansas Legislature Passes Anti-Sharia Law, The Big Meanies

There’s only one problem with the narrative going around the Left-O-Sphere that Kansas is now a bunch of Islamophobes: the actual legislation doesn’t actually mention Sharia law, which makes the USA Today headline rather improper

Kansas lawmakers pass anti-Islamic law measure[1]

A bill designed to prevent Kansas courts or government agencies from making decisions based on Islamic or other foreign legal codes has cleared the state Legislature after a contentious debate about whether the measure upholds American values or appeals to prejudice against Muslims.

The Senate approved the bill Friday on a 33-3 vote. The House had approved it, 120-0, earlier in the week. The measure goes next to Republican Gov. Sam Brownback, who hasn’t said whether he’ll sign or veto the measure.

The measure doesn’t specifically mention Shariah law, which broadly refers to codes within the Islamic legal system. Instead, it says that courts, administrative agencies or state tribunals can’t base rulings on any foreign law or legal system that would not grant the parties the same rights guaranteed by state and U.S. constitutions.

Certainly, much of the intent behind the measure, as many who voted for it stated, is to block the use of Islamic law being used in making legal decisions here in the US. Is this a widespread problem? No[2]. But it has happened. And we have federal judges and Supreme Court justices who’ve said they would like to use international law to render decisions. This legislation stops the use of any non-American legal system laws from being used to make legal decisions in Kansas.

While much of Sharia law is benign, like far-left liberalism, it creeps up. This is how we end up with laws against lemonade stands[3] and bake sales[4]. The thing about Sharia law is that it is meant to follow the religious precepts of the Koran and is very flexible. It is not a hard-baked legal code. Oh, and then there are the parts about honor killings, divorcing a woman by saying “I divorce you” three times, women needing 4 witness to prove they were raped, women being subservient to men, it being OK to beat a women per the Koran, gays being considered abominations who should be hanged, and so, so much more[5].

Anyone who thinks this is simply fear of Muslims should go live in a country that practices Sharia law. Especially women. See how you far if caught, say, drinking. I’ve always found it very strange that so many liberals support the concept of Sharia law, when it, in fact, stands against all notions of a fair and equal society.
