Some People Would Have You Believe…

Some people would have you believe that Bush lied about Iraq’s WMDs. I believe that they’re the ones attempting to mislead the American people about how our intelligence agencies work. Unanimity among all members of every intelligence agency on anything is the exception, not the rule. So today, to try to go back and cherry pick dissenting voices about particular issues after the fact and claim that they prove the President lied is willfully deceptive. There’s no other conclusion you can come to given the legion of people, Democrat and Republican, foreign and domestic, who agreed before the war that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Bush’s position on the extistence of Iraq’s WMDs: was not substantially different: from the positon held by Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Joe Lieberman, John Kerry, George Tenet, David Kay, Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac, on, and on, and on. To claim that all those people lied about WMD in Iraq, which is in essence what the people who claim Bush lied are doing, is simply ridiculous.

Some people would have you believe that the brave men and women in our armed forces are risking their lives for nothing in Iraq. I on the other hand believe that we have every reason to be proud of our military because like the “Greatest Generation” before them, they’re are helping to keep our country safe while bringing freedom to a nation once pinned under the iron boot of a madman.

Every Al-Qaeda terrorist in Iraq who gets blown away or sent to a prison cell is one less terrorist to plot and carry out terrorist attacks here in our homeland. And the effect on the region of an Iraqi Democracy? If freedom takes hold in Iraq and spreads from there across the region, it would be the most signifcant thing to happen in the Middle-East since Saladin retook Jerusalem in 1187.

In the past, our soldiers have risked their lives to remove threats to our country and bring freedom to nations like Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, & Grenada. Today, they’re doing the same in Iraq and God bless ’em for it.

Some people would have you believe that we would have been better off had we never removed Saddam Hussein. I believe that those people have already forgotten the crucial lessons of 9/11. Before that fateful day, we sat on our hands and allowed rogue states to give support and shelter to hostile terrorist groups with worldwide reach and a lot of innocent people at the WTC and Pentagon paid for our inaction with their lives. George W. Bush understands that, which is why he said,

“America must not ignore the threat gathering against us. Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof — the smoking gun — that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.”

Others, like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand, would rather go back to our failed policy of treating terrorism like a law enforcement issue. That’s the very policy that failed to stop 9/11 and we must never go back to it.

Some people would have you believe that without stockpiles of WMD, Saddam was no threat and should have been left in power. I believe that sort of childlike naivette doesn’t belong in a post 9/11 world. Saddam was a brutal, anti-American, dictator who twice started wars of aggression, tried to have a US President assassinated, and used weapons of mass destruction on his on people. Furthermore, Saddam undeniably had ties with terrorists including Al-Qeada. As: Dick Cheney revealed: back in Sept of 2003,

“We learned more and more that there was a relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda that stretched back through most of the decade of the ’90s, that it involved training, for example, on (biological weapons) and (chemical weapons), that al-Qaeda sent personnel to Baghdad to get trained on the systems that are involved. The Iraqis providing bomb-making expertise and advice to the al-Qaeda organization.

We know, for example, in connection with the original World Trade Center bombing in ’93 that one of the bombers was Iraqi, returned to Iraq after the attack of ’93. And we’ve learned subsequent to that, since we went into Baghdad and got into the intelligence files, that this individual probably also received financing from the Iraqi government as well as safe haven.”

On top of that, the man currently leading Al-Qaeda’s resistance in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarkawi, was known to be in Iraq long BEFORE we invaded.

Furthermore, as David Kay revealed, Saddam was: far from innocent: on the WMD front. Iraq was working on a chemical weapon using the poison ricin, theirnuclear program: had been started back up on 2000 & 2001, and senior Iraqi officials said Saddam had every intention of restarting his WMD programs when “external restrictions were removed”.

Because George W. Bush put the security of the American people first, we no longer have to worry about turning on the news some hellish autumn morning, as we did on 9/11, and seeing carnage in the streets because Saddam supplied Al-Qaeda or other terrorists with a ricin based chemical weapon or a dirty bomb. Whatever some people would have you believe, all Americans should be grateful that George W. Bush did the right thing and got rid of Saddam.
