A Short, Open Letter: 3 Things Republicans In Congress Who Are Thinking Of Caving On Taxes Need To Know

Based on the comments we’re hearing publicly, there are obviously a number of Republicans in Congress who are preparing to go along with the Democrats on a tax hike for wealthy Americans. This is what they need to know.

IF you’re going to give in on higher taxes…

1) We’d be better off if we didn’t raise taxes at all. It’s a doubly bad idea to raise taxes when the economy is sluggish. So, you know that you’re planning to surrender on tax increases because you think it’s good politics, not because you think it’s good policy. Since that’s the case, don’t trash Grover Norquist and try to make him into the bad guy for fighting so hard to keep you from pursuing a policy that’s bad for the country.

2) If you’re going to give in, don’t trade your cow for some magic beans. Giving in on tax increases is not a small thing and you should get something big in return, like entitlement reform or significant spending cuts NOW, not just meaningless baseless budget cuts that we all know will never happen.

3) If you get rolled yet again by giving the Democrats tax increases today in return for empty promises about what they’re going to do tomorrow, then you deserve to be primaried and you deserve to lose.
