The media is celebrating the decision of a terminally ill young woman to take her life via assisted suicide. Brittany Maynard, 29, moved to Oregon to take advantage of their “death with dignity” law after receiving a diagnosis of Stage IV brain cancer and being given only six months to live, and will kill herself November 1st.

“We all just realized that I am terminally ill and I’m dying and I would just prefer to die with less pain and less suffering,” Maynard said.

Maynard will die at home, peacefully, with her husband and loved ones by her side. She will end her own life using medication prescribed to her by a doctor.

She chose Nov. 1 because her husband’s birthday is Oct. 30 and she wants to celebrate with him one last time.

Make no mistake, Maynard says what she has chosen for herself is not suicide.

“There is not a cell in my body that is suicidal or that wants to die,” she told People Magazine. “I want to live. I wish there was a cure for my disease but there’s not.”

What a great birthday present for her husband! Now every year he’ll think of his wife’s death on his birthday — who wouldn’t want that? In all seriousness, it is disturbing how many media outlets are cheering her decision and calling it “brave”. Killing yourself, whatever the reason, is taking the easy way out — assisted suicide may be legal in Oregon, but that doesn’t mean it’s something to celebrate.
