Republicans In Congress to Push AMMO ACT to Limit DHS Purchases

The Obama Administration wanted to inflict gun control on the American people, but if Republicans in Congress have their way, Obama’s Department of Homeland Security is going to get a taste of his own medicine. Today, Republicans in the House and Senate are introducing a bill that will limit ammo purchases for federal agencies.

The bill’s sponsor in the Senate is Jim Inhofe (R., Okla.). He said the following in a statement to the Washington Beacon,

“President Obama has been adamant about curbing law-abiding Americans’ access and opportunities to exercise their Second Amendment rights. One way the Obama administration is able to do this is by limiting what’s available in the market with federal agencies purchasing unnecessary stockpiles of ammunition.

As the public learned in a House committee hearing this week, the Department of Homeland Security has two years worth of ammo on hand and allots nearly 1,000 more rounds of ammunition for DHS officers than is used on average by our Army officers. The AMMO Act of 2013 will enforce transparency and accountability of federal agencies’ ammunition supply while also protecting law-abiding citizens access to these resources.”

The Republican sponsor of the bill in the House, Frank Lucas (R., Okla.) chimed in as well.

“After hearing from my constituents about the shortage of ammunition in Oklahoma and the Department of Homeland Security’s profligate purchases of ammunition. We have introduced the AMMO Act of 2013 to curtail these purchases so Americans can exercise their Second Amendment rights without being encumbered by the federal government.”

While all Americans should certainly want our domestic law enforcement officers to have all the ammo they need to practice and execute their duties, we shouldn’t want them to buy so much ammo that they drive up the cost for other Americans if it’s ultimately going to be wasted.

So far, DHS has not provided a good explanation for why its officers need 1000 more rounds of ammo per year than army officers and unless it does, a little congressional oversight appears to be just the thing for DHS.
