North Korea: Statism Taken to Its Inevitable Nightmare Conclusion

Progressives always want to progress. But eventually you get to the end of line – the place where statism has reached its logical conclusion and cannot be pushed any further. That place is North Korea:

North Korea forces women to undergo abortions and young mothers to drown their newborn babies, and has starved and executed hundreds of thousands of detainees at secret prison camps – atrocities that the chairman of a U.N. panel that documented the abuses compares to those of Nazi Germany.

The panel could compare North Korea to the more similar Soviet Union, which created it as a satellite state following World War II and provided the foundation of its ideology. But that would conflict with the UN’s own communist-friendly ideology.

But at least the UN is doing some good for a change by shining light on the horrors that result when people lose the ability to restrain government:

“The gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world,” the U.N. Commission on Inquiry said in a 372-page report released Monday on North Korea’s atrocities. …

The report documents crimes against humanity, including “extermination, murder, enslavement, torture, imprisonment, rape, forced abortions and other sexual violence, persecution on political, religious, racial and gender grounds, the forcible transfer of populations, the enforced disappearance of persons and the inhumane act of knowingly causing prolonged starvation.”

Unfortunately the only purpose of the report is to allow bureauweenies an opportunity to posture self-righteously.

Its recommendations include U.N. Security Council sanctions against those who appear to be most responsible for crimes against humanity, but the North’s diplomatic isolation and protection by ally China make it hard to hold its leaders accountable. As a permanent Security Council member, China has used its veto power to shield North Korea from U.N. action.

Meanwhile, the North Korean regime continues to be supported on a coercive basis by American taxpayers through the State Department. The nuclear program that makes it such a menace to its neighbors was helped along by Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

The solution to the hell on earth created by runaway tyranny is not indignant reports by useless UN bureaucrats. It is a strong America, committed to limiting government. That is all that prevented the world from slipping into the darkness in the 20th century. But at the moment, we have our hands full trying to prevent tyranny from getting a foothold in our own country.
