Senator Ed Markey Bids to Impose Speech Codes on the Internet

If you have anything to say about a member of one of the groups at the top of the liberal caste system that might be deemed critical, you had better get it off your chest now, before Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) gets the First Amendment repealed:

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey wants to empower an obscure federal agency to begin scouring the Internet, TV and radio for speech it finds threatening – a plan met with jeers from defenders of the First Amendment.

Jeers would be appropriate if leftist thugs like Markey weren’t calling the shots in Washington. My first reaction was a gasp of horror.

The “Hate Crime Reporting Act of 2014” presents a frankly chilling proposition. The spookily-named National Telecommunications and Information Administration (what, you’ve never heard of it?) would be required to submit a report to Congress on “the use of telecommunications” “to advocate and encourage violent acts and the commission of crimes of hate.”

Using its own judgment to determine what qualifies as impermissible speech, the new government hall monitors would then recommend steps for Congress to take that are “appropriate and necessary to address such use of telecommunications.”

We aren’t talking about actual physical threats; there are already laws against those. This bill apparently aims to impose university-style speech codes on the Internet and talk radio. Evidently Markey & Co. are attempting to criminalize speech that any member of protected groups like Muslims, homosexuals, and blacks decides to find offensive.

As for the First Amendment: try exercising your rights under the Second Amendment in New York City and you will discover how seriously liberals take the Bill of Rights.

One more Democrat pick on the Supreme Court and a law like this could be upheld as constitutional, putting a definitive end to the expression, “It’s a free country.”
