Ever heard of Wraptastic?

The basic idea behind this product is that for $25 ($11 for the product and $14 for the shipping and handling), you get a product that is marginally better at dealing with plastic wrap and tin foil than the packaging those products come with.

Here’s the thing: Even for someone who’s not very coordinated, handling tin foil and plastic wrap is about a 1 out of 10 on the difficulty scale. Moreover, it’s not like the average person spends half his day piddling around with tin foil and plastic wrap. The average person might do it 2-3 times a week — if that — and even most of the frequent users probably top out at doing it a couple of times a day when they pack their kid’s lunch.

In other words, this a product that fixes a practically non-existent problem for $25. It reminds me of those old episodes of the Jetsons where George came home from work and complained that he had to push a button 8 times that day instead of 7.

While I’m a capitalist and I have no moral problem with people making or spending money on things they want, something like this makes you wonder how far over the falls we’ve gone into rampant consumerism when hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars could change hands because of a product like this.
