With the RNC under way, and the election only a few months away, some exciting quotes on public relations & politicians I gathered, together with commentary:

• “Ninety eight percent of the adults in this country are decent, hardworking, honest Americans. It’s the other lousy two percent that get all the publicity. But then, we elected them.” Lily Tomlin
  • Clearly this is the opinion of the media still today as according to a recently released Pew study, the majority of press coverage about both Obama & Romney is negative: http://www.prdaily.com/Main/Articles/12521.aspx
• “All the president is, is a glorified public relations man who spends his time flattering, kissing, and kicking people to get them to do what they are supposed to do anyway.” Harry S Truman
  • No question that’s what we will see in the media over the next few months
• “What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself.” Abraham Lincoln
  • Both campaigns are doing their best to shape their candidate as they see fit.  Romney’s wife’s speech last night was intended to make him more “likeable” – key for him to win this race.
• “Publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman.” Louis D. Brandeis
  • At least in an ideal world, whoever the light is shined most upon will be seen as the best man – and ultimately the next President of the United States of America.
• “I have come to the conclusion that the major part of the work of a President is to increase the gate receipts of expositions and fairs and bring tourists to town.” William Howard Taft
  • While it’s more difficult today than when Taft ran his campaign, clearly this election also is all about the economy. Whoever Americans believe will best increase America’s “gate receipts” is most likely to win this election.
