Nobody Owes You Anything, You’re Not Lucky, And If You Can’t Afford It, You Don’t Deserve It

“Despite its present popularity, the phrase ‘the American Dream’ came into common use only after the 1970s. ..But the phrase languished, probably because it seemed contradicted by experience. For most Americans, life had always been a struggle. Little was guaranteed. By contrast, Adams’s lofty vision was utopian. Now it’s become an informal entitlement.” –: Robert Samuelson

You’re not owed a good job, good fortune, or a good life just because you’re born in America. You’re not even owed those things if you play by the rules and work hard. Moreover, as Adam Carolla notes,: “You’re not lucky”: either.

“Your dad could own a Ferrari dealership and that would put you at the top or you could be born without your limbs, that would put you on the bottom, but then there’s the middle. The middle is where 99% of us reside.”: – Adam Carolla

Are those numbers off? Yes, a little bit, but not all that much.

Here’s the ugly truth.

* Most people who are rich deserve to be rich.

* Most people who are poor deserve to be poor.

* You’re supposed to want things and not be able to afford them.

* Life is supposed to be hard.

* You’re supposed to have to work 40 hours a week just to get by…and more than that if you want to thrive.

* It’s not the job of God, government, your family, or society to show up and fix your problems.

You think that’s harsh? The truth is that if you live in America, you have it easier than 99% of the human beings who’ve walked the planet. Tell me how tough you’ve got it compared to some Chinese rice farmer born in a rural hut, in a little village that doesn’t have electricity twelve hours a day. Tell me how bad you’ve got it compared to the Mexicans born in a country so corrupt, backwards, and non-functional that they feel compelled to break the law to get to the United States just so they can work 60 hours a week picking strawberries for minimum wage.

Life is supposed to be a knife fight in a phone booth and there is absolutely no way on God’s green earth that we can turn it into a game of tiddlywinks for everyone with our current level of technology and resources. Anybody can promise “easy.” Anybody can promise you anything. But, the sooner you accept that nobody owes you anything, you’re not lucky, and if you can’t afford it, you don’t deserve it, the better off you and everyone else around you will be.
