You Might Be A Democrat

You might be a Democrat if you believe…
Fighting against government-subsidized contraceptives constitutes a “war on women,” but when Islamists stone a woman to death because she was raped, it is just “cultural differences.”
The Second Amendment only guarantees the people’s right to own a musket, yet viewing Internet pornography in a public library is protected by the First.
Teaching multiple origin theories in public schools is an abhorrent dilution of science curriculum, but in history class, class time should focus on the contributions of homosexuals and ethnic minorities.
Teenagers should be able to …

Tax, Spend, And Blame
11 Apr 2013

President Obama has unveiled his budget proposal (only two months late, but who’s counting?), and he presented it with the same gravity and urgency that informed Americans have come to know and love from Dear Leader. Each and every time the president makes the decision to engage in smear tactics to push his next bad policy through the legislature, he necessarily takes a dramatic stand in front of the media and points his finger at the Republican bogeyman. It is the same politics of divisiveness, the same vilify-and-conquer strategy he …

Is A Balanced Budget In 5 Years Without Raising Taxes Possible? Rand Paul Says, “Yes!”
25 Mar 2013
1:30 am
John Hawkins
Barack Obama seems to believe that our country can spend enormous sums that we don’t have, every year, from now until the end of time with no negative repercussions for our country. That strategy has never worked for any country, at any point, in the history of the world and it’s very unlikely it will work for us. That’s why it’s great news that at least one Republican senator is offering up a real alternative.
Via the Washington Times.
Sen. Rand Paul formally rolled out his 2014 budget blueprint on Friday, offering …

Cyprus May Be The First Nation To Steal Bank Deposits, But It Won’t Be The Last
21 Mar 2013

John Hawkins
When a nation is on the verge of having its credit cut off because it’s spent more than it’s taken in for a long, long time, it may be willing to take some truly desperate measures to stay afloat.
Cyprus took the unprecedented step on Monday of closing its banks until Thursday as officials scrambled to renegotiate the terms of a controversial bailout that threatens to force savers to take a €5.8bn (£5bn) hit to their deposits.
Finance ministers from the 17-country eurozone held an emergency video conference call and concluded that …

It Can Happen Here

For years now, the Euro zone has been experiencing difficulty absorbing the costs of bailing out relatively small countries with relatively small economies that have relatively small amounts of debt.
Most recently, Euro zone leaders agreed to fund a bailout of Cyprus with a deal that includes taxing private bank deposits. The deal to fund 10 billion euros worth of rescue loans for Cyprus imposes a 6.75 to 9.9 percent tax on those with cash in Cyprus banks. Without the EU bailout Cyprus cannot avoid default, but the unexpected and unprecedented …

Let’s Keep It Real

New projections by the Congressional Budget Office show that this could be a record year for federal tax revenue – according to the CBO, the federal government should be bringing in $2.7 TRILLION this year, an all-time record. At first blush, one would think this is good news, and a vindication of President Obama’s “balanced approach.” But even though we’re looking at the possibility of record-high tax revenues, deficits are projected to be around $850 billion.
So the big question is, does America have a spending problem? Will President Obama’s “balanced …

What We Don’t Need
28 Feb 2013

One of the most frustrating thing about the current debate on gun control is the obfuscation and lies that are constantly passed around by the Left. The very idea that the Second Amendment might just be about self-defense, home-defense, hunting, and sport shooting is absolutely ludicrous, yet arguments based on this premise are treated as valid. We are constantly told, from a variety of sources, that law-abiding American citizens don’t “need” AR-15 rifles. We are told that we don’t “need” 30-round magazines. We are told that all we really “need” …

Hooray, Obama Proposes A Replacement Plan For Sequestration!

I guess David Brooks is wrong: Obama does have a plan. Or at least an outline of a plan. Whether there are any actual details and legislation that can be voted on is unknown. Here’s Jennifer Palmieri blogging for Obama
A Balanced Plan to Avert the Sequester and Reduce the Deficit
Good thing America doesn’t have over $16 trillion in debt.
In eight days, apocalyptic automatic cuts are slated to take effect, threatening tens of millions of jobs, and cutting vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and our men and …

One lesser-known fact about the upcoming Sequester cuts is that it includes a pay cut for Congress. This, without a doubt, is a good thing, if only because, despite their near constant bickering about how the other side needs to be more bipartisan, both Houses of Congress have proven to be utter failures during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Our nation has not had a budget for almost four straight years now, a failure that primarily lies at the feet of the Democrat-controlled Senate. Congress’s debt commission failed to identify sufficient cuts to …

Why People And Nations Major In Minor Things

John Hawkins
In Victor Davis Hanson’s latest column, he included this gem of a quote,
It is a depressing characteristic of government today to loudly enact legislation and impose regulations of little utility, while neglecting to address the root causes of truly serious problems. — Victor Davis Hanson
What he’s describing is something that happens both with people and nations that have lost confidence in their ability to deal with their biggest problems. Because the issues confronting them seem to be insurmountable, they begin to major in minor things. Then they either distract themselves …

Looking Forward To A Shutdown

President Obama’s press conference yesterday showed America just exactly what he meant when he said he would not negotiate on raising the debt ceiling. He will not negotiate. He will take no prisoners. He will accept nothing less than complete and total surrender to his agenda.
Once again, the President of the United States seeks to blind the American people to reality, giving them instead a convenient collection of sound bites that place all blame this crisis he created at the feet of Republicans in Congress.
President Obama came out with a …

What Fiscal Cliff? VP Biden, Gov’t Workers Getting Raises
30 Dec 2012

Warner Todd Huston
Imagine you are working for a company that is going bankrupt, but everyone you work with and your bosses are getting pay raises. Seem absurd? Not if you work for the failing federal government because President Obama has happily decreed that Vice President Biden, members of Congress and most federal workers are getting raises for 2013.
As the U.S. government is losing its luster on the bond market and as the fiscal cliff looms, President Obama issued an executive order to give everyone raises.
Obama has generously bestowed a $6,379 per year …

On Cutting A Deal To Avert The Fiscal Cliff
3 Dec 2012

John Hawkins
Here’s the reality of the situation.
– The economy is in bad shape and it’s conceivable that going over the fiscal cliff could push it into recession, although nobody really knows one way or the other.
– Going over the fiscal cliff is probably the best hope for deficit reduction we’ll have in the next four years.
– We’re being told that Republicans will be blamed if we go over the fiscal cliff and that may be so. However, the Republicans always seem to be blamed, so what else is new?
– Publicly at …

FactCheck.org: Obama’s False Jobs Creation Claims
25 Oct 2012

Warner Todd Huston
President Obama has lately been touting the amazing claim that he’s created 5.2 million new jobs as President. His fantastic claim is featured in a new TV. But FactCheck.org says, not so fast. Those claims are “inflated,” to say the least.
FactCheck notes that the 5.2 million claim is accurate, such as it is. But what makes it “inflated” is that the jobs number refers only to jobs created after 2010 and does not include the 4.3 million that were lost earlier in Obama’s term.
Further, according to FactCheck, Obama’s number counts …

Softening The Blow: NPR Edits Word ‘Tax’ Out of Democrat Debate Performance
20 Oct 2012

Warner Todd Huston
Voters do not like taxes. So, National Public Radio in New Hampshire seems to have thought it would be nice to help Maggie Hassan, the Democrat candidate for Governor, by doing a little editing work to take the word “tax” out of one of her answers at a recent candidates debate. The radio folks claimed it was a “mistake,” but eliminating the word sure does tend to soften the blow of her policy ideas.
The September 19 debate featured Republican candidate Ovide Lamontagne and Democrat candidate Maggie Hassan both vying to …

If You Work for Government, You Deserve to be Fired
1 Oct 2012

Warner Todd Huston
Yes, that title, If You Work for Government, You Deserve to be Fired, is meant literally. I really don’t care what you do for government I think you deserve to be fired.* In fact, I think that you need to be fired to save this republic. Not only do I want you fired, I want your pension negated. You don’t deserve one.
I’ll let that sink in a bit.
Of course, conservatives have the reputation of wanting to oust everyone in office and for wanting to “vote the scoundrels out.” But, I …

Think This Election Doesn’t Matter?

Chad Stafko
Those deeply entrenched in politics and individuals passionate about candidates and causes often claim that an election is of profound importance and that the results will have a great impact on our nation. These oftentimes turn out to be unintended exaggerations. However, this election is indeed one of those.
We stand at a wide fork in the road of America’s long and prosperous history, with two distinct pathways from which we, the voters, will choose. Our chosen path will be either one that vaults our government to unprecedented levels of intervention …

Mitt Chooses Running Mate: It’s PAUL RYAN!
11 Aug 2012

The long wait is over. Mitt Romney has selected Rep. Paul Ryan to be his running mate. The weeks leading to this moment was beyond stressful for conservatives. Will Romney go bold and pick Ryan, Jindal, or Rubio– or be boring and select Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio or former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. I’ve been against picking members that constitute the point of the lance of the conservative moment for the number two spot for the simple reason that, historically, the VP position is where political careers go an …

7) “Those who can do. Those who can’t form a supercommittee.” — Mark Steyn. After yet another Mexican standoff caused by Democrats adamantly fighting against spending cuts, despite the fact that the country is headed toward bankruptcy, the geniuses in Congress came up with a solution: the Super Committee. The Super Committee is sort of like Superman, except it doesn’t actually save anyone and its only “super power” was accomplishing nothing while trying to shift the blame elsewhere. Who would have ever thought that a committee composed of Republicans who …

Solyndra Republicans, Why the GOP Cannot be Trusted
22 Jul 2012

Warner Todd Huston
On Friday, July 20, Politico reported that GOP leadership in the House beat back an attempt by recalcitrant members of their own caucus to continue to quietly support the sort of pork spending that gave us Solyndra in the first place.
House GOP leadership has been beating the Democrats up for the pure wasteful spending that was Democrat support for the now bankrupted “green energy” company Solyndra. But a few Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee wanted to buck the anti-bailout theme and quietly keep the spending program that …
