Obama’s Appalling West Point Commencement Address

The terrible significance of the Obama presidency hit home during the appalling speech he gave yesterday to the 2014 graduating class of West Point.

American Thinker sums it up like this:

Yesterday’s speech to the graduating class of West Point by President Obama may be remembered as the signal that his presidency has entered a crisis of confidence, much as Jimmy Carter’s infamous “malaise” speech has gone down in history as marking a failed presidency. Not only was the content of the speech delusional (calling Russia “isolated” in the wake of a massive and historic gas deal with China that marks a major rapprochement between two powers hostile to the United States; claiming Ukraine as an example of the success of his coalition strategy), the delivery was wooden, as if Obama were wishing he were on a golf course or basketball court, and felt a hostile vibe. And the visible reception was embarrassingly icy, with only a few people applauding at key lines, and a standing ovation in which the vast majority remained seated and unmoved, suggesting the commander in chief is held in contempt by the next generation of military leadership.

Given Obama’s pathetic bleating that he is not weak, it was inevitable that comparisons would be made to Jimmy Carter’s infamous More Mush From the Wimp speech. But Obama’s lecture was even more alarming, due to the insight it gave not only into his defective character but into his radical attitudes, and the signals it sent to America’s adversaries.

At least there was a laugh line, even if the anti-American lunacy that followed was anything but funny:

“I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being.”

Bwahahaha! The last remark I heard from him on this topic was:

“I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”

In other words, “No I do not believe in American exceptionalism. America is just another country, no better than the basket case Greece.”

Compliments of Stormfax.

At West Point, he again immediately contradicted his own patently false assertion:

“I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being. But what makes us exceptional is not our ability to flout international norms and the rule of law; it’s our willingness to affirm them through our actions.”

Yet again he gets in a dig at the USA, by accusing it of flouting international norms and the rule of law. But we Americans can still redeem ourselves and become exceptional by obediently serving other countries’ interests.

Among the most threatening of these foreign interests is the unacceptable Law of the Sea Convention, which amounts to a looting spree of American wealth by supranational agencies, and which would entail ceding sovereignty over our own territorial waters — the kind of outrage against the American nation that West Point cadets are willing to lay their lives on the line to prevent. Here’s what Obama had to tell them:

It’s a lot harder to call on China to resolve its maritime disputes under the Law of the Sea Convention when the United States Senate has refused to ratify it — despite the repeated insistence of our top military leaders that the treaty advances our national security. That’s not leadership; that’s retreat. That’s not strength; that’s weakness.

Turning over our wealth and our sovereignty is not leadership or strength; it is treason.

Note that the passage above sends a clear signal to the communist Chinese that their increasingly bellicose expansionism will not be challenged by the USA. I would not want to be Taiwanese or even Japanese with the likes of Obama in the White House.

What right have we to defend our allies? We are a flawed country that won’t even turn over control of our territorial waters to foreign entities.

As always with Obama, he exploited the opportunity to defend his policy failures (most delusionally with regard to Russia and Iran) and to take irrelevant partisan jabs at his opposition (e.g., denouncing those who refuse to play along with the global warming hoax).

But despite its awkward delivery and icy reception, the speech was a success — provided it was intended as an application for the job of Secretary-General of the hostile United Nations.

Keep in mind that this was not some garden variety Marxist intellectual delivering a harangue to cheering commies at Columbia or Berkeley, but the Commander in Chief addressing the next generation of Army officers.

Those who voted for this character have their life’s work cut out for them: living down the shame.

A less disciplined audience would have looked like this.
