  28 Oct 2013     6:23 am

LONGVIEW, Texas – A Texas middle-schooler was sentenced to “solitary confinement” after school officials took offense to his t-shirt, asked him to change it, and he refused.
Christian Davidson wore a shirt designed by his father’s clothing company to Spring Hill Middle School this week, which depicted an eagle emblem on the front, a Bible verse on the back, and the words “God, Guns and Country” on the left sleeve, the Blaze reports.
The Bible verse is from Romans 13:12. It states: “Let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put …

Unions oppose bipartisan effort to keep criminals out of public schools
  25 Oct 2013     5:45 am

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Federal lawmakers want to prevent schools from employing convicted sex offenders, kidnappers, murderers, pornographers, spouse beaters and rapists.
It’s such an obviously good idea that Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. House agree on it, and passed legislation by a simple voice vote to make it the law.
But there’s one group who thinks this is a bad idea: leaders of our nation’s teachers unions.
“The bill has run into objections from major teachers’ unions like the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers. In letters to lawmakers, …

LOS ANGELES – The United Teachers Los Angeles union is attempting to force the Los Angeles school district to re-evaluate dozens of teacher dismissals because union leaders don’t think they’re fair.
“… (T)his system leads to many innocent educators being swooped up in the dragnet,” UTLA President Warren Fletcher said, according to the LA School Report.
LA school officials have ramped up teacher terminations. Superintendent John Deasy has made it his mission to remove teachers guilty of misconduct, as well as teachers who have received two consecutive “unsatisfactory” evaluations, the news site …

  11 Oct 2013     7:10 am

CAREFREE, Ariz. – Some parents of students at Cactus Shadows High School are outraged over a play that has students acting out sexual encounters with a goat, and using vulgar sexual expressions.
Other parents of students in teacher Andrew Cupo’s advanced drama class believe the concerns are overblown, and resent parents who questioned their children about the sexually explicit play without their permission.
Parents attended the governing board meeting for the Cave Creek Unified School District Tuesday and shared about two hours of public comment on the play “The Goat, or Who …

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina lawmakers recently passed a new state budget that includes education reforms that would improve teacher quality and expand school choice options for families.
Republican leaders in the state House and Senate recently announced they’ve reached agreement on a $20.6 billion budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year that includes a $23.6 million provision “that scraps the longstanding teacher tenure system in favor of employing educators on contracts that are renewed based on performance reviews,” the Associated Press reports.
“Starting in 2014, it would also set aside $10 million to allow …

Maryland teachers union planning a “work-to-rule” protest over salary dispute with board
  20 Jul 2013     2:11 am

HARFORD, Md. – Teachers in Harford, Maryland are planning to make their students pay the price for their anger with the school board by refusing to work beyond the letter of their union contract this fall.
This type of slowdown – known as “work to rule’ – is a popular negotiating tactic with teachers unions across the nation. Union members refuse to perform any duties that are not specifically spelled out in their collective bargaining agreement, and use growing public frustration over their lack of effort as leverage for more money.
