In the debate over legislation to require universal background checks for prospective gun purchasers, a central argument of guns rights groups was that it would lead inevitably to creation of a national registry to identify and track firearms owners.

Coming to the realization that insisting automatic weapons with high capacity magazines be available for sporting use wasn’t gaining much traction among the general public, gun rights advocates have shifted their rationale to argue that private ownership of such weapons is necessary to protect against a tyrannical government, either our own or from somewhere else in the world.

In the mid-1950′s, I began my career in the newspaper business on the daily paper in my hometown in Pennsylvania and, as the new kid in the newsroom, my assignments often required unearthing information that others wished to remain secret.
