The Democratic Underground Post Of The Day: Viva La Castro!
One of the most puzzling things about the American left is the natural tendency of many of their numbers to sympathize with anyone who hates their country.
Which brings us to a thread at the Democratic Underground called "Why do people hate Castro so much? Still?". And while there are a few people who aren't Castro fans posting the thread, it's loaded with lots of people who're obviously fans of the old thug...or at least not fans of his enemy America. Big surprise to find people like that in a Democratic enclave huh?
Take Fidel Castro for instance.
Here's an anti-American, Communist, dictator who rules his nation which is 90 miles off our coast by force, throws dissenters in prison, and has run Cuba so poorly that people are willing to try to cross the ocean on anything that will float to get out of there. Yet, Castro is adored by left-wing celebrities like Oliver Stone, Harry Belafonte, Jesse Jackson, Norman Mailer, Danny Glover, Jack Nicholson, Naomi Campbell & Kevin Costner.
So here's a few of the aforementioned DU'er's on Castro....
indigobusiness:"...I read something recently how people, in places like Cuba, who have so little materially and focus their lives on relationships are far happier. That is so telling."
prayin4rain"(The guy who started the thread in another post) Does anyone have a legitimate and objective site that claims he has killed all of these innocent people, (I'm not being sarcastic) because I can't find one. I found an encyclopedia site that stated that was a claim made by the US, but that is all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fidel_Castro This is the site I found and like a said he doesn't sound like a Saint but he doesn't seem that bad either. --- If one of you who seems to know why he is so hated has something for me to read I would appreciate it. Also, I did study him a little bit in Spanish class and again the HATE is lost on me."
H2O Man:"Castro has a beard and one simply can NOT trust a man with a beard. It's been pointed out on DU that Al Gore wore a beard for a period of time; the US Supreme Court anticipated this, and ruled he was unfit to serve as president. Karl Marx had a beard, and he forced millions of poor people into slavery in the USSR and China .... those same lost souls could have lived in the lap of luxury under a clean-shaven George W. Bush. I grow very suspicious of the motivation of those who advocate for beady-eyed men with beards."
soothsayer:"Good old fashioned hubris. They just can't stomach that he's WINNING just by his mere existence, he is BEATING the great US of A. We tried to kill him thru exploding cigars, poision, and even tried making his hair and beard fall out so he'd lose respect. We couldn't get the job done, so it makes us look bad."
Zhade:"Because they are woefully misinformed about Castro and Cuba in general. They've been fed lies from this government for decades, and despite all evidence to the contrary still believe those lies.
It's very Republican of them. I have no idea why they believe the way they do, and no idea how to inform them when people much more involved in the issue have tried to no avail.
They should visit Cuba (too bad it's illegal) and see for themselves just how accurate their view of reality toward Cuba is."
bandera:"Quite right. But, it's so much easier and PC to remain ignorant. And, it comes in handy to show off their "I'm an anti-Communist" credentials. Mustn't upset the Right Wingers, you know."
ElsewheresDaughter:"Faux & friends were laughing this morning when they showed castro falling they make me SICK!!!"
stavka:"I don't hate Castro, in fact I respect him."
leesa:"Because (Castro) stole their profiteering constructs in favor of the populace's long-term welfare. He was harsh, but the could have a self-sustaining country if we would stop messing with them. They have an excellent educational and healthcare system. Something we completely lack."
catbert836:"Castri isn't a paragon of virtue but George W is even worse. At least you can count on Castro to do what he says he'll do. We're just mad because we still want to control Cuba as our legacy from the Spanish-American War."
Marx_redux:"I am not sure most people hate Castro. probably just the same ones that hate Muslims, Jews, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics or any other non-white peoples. Hmmm Evil has a name and it is Republican."
(*** For this post, I'm going to cover a variety of different topics in three sentences or less ***)
-- "The Ansar al-Sunnah Army in Iraq has issued two new statements, including congratulating Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s Tawheed wal-Jihad Movement on being designated by the White House as a terrorist organization. Referring to Usama Bin Laden as “our Shaykh”, Ansar Sunnah boasted that John Kerry’s recent criticisms of President Bush’s efforts in the war on terror have 'increased the joy in our hearts'". Whether it's Vietnam or Iraq, you can always count on John Kerry to cheer up America's enemies...
-- You need proof that liberalism has lost the war on ideas with conservatism? Consider that John Kerry, one of the most liberal members of the Senate, is doing hunting photo-ops and speeches on his "faith". You don't see George Bush visiting abortion clinics, visiting the NAACP, or hanging out with anti-war protestors do you?
-- Here's a suggestion for the bloggers out there: register for Blogdex. It's quick, easy, can help get more conservative stories on Blogdex, and can help increase the traffic for you and your favorite blogs. PS: I believe they may have done some sort of database purge judging by the number of links making the front page so even if you've registered before, you may need to do so again.
-- Here's a short John O'Neill interview I forgot to link last night. Here's a sample:
Aylward - On a personal level, what has been the most surprising or shocking thing that you've learned through this whole experience.
O'Neill - The level of depravity in John Kerry's soul.
-- Anybody who tells you there's going to be a draft either has pudding for brains or is deliberately lying to you and in either case, you shouldn't be paying any attention to them. More on why that is here & here. Feel free to spread the word to any nervous college kids (or their parents) that you happen to know.
-- I plan to see the The Grudge this week-end at the movie theater & The Day After Tomorrow On Video. The Grudge sounds like a wickedly cool adaption of a Japanese horror film. The Day After Tomorrow -- well, I'm hoping the niftyness of the special effects > than the environmental wackiness of the movie.
-- The ten political/military/legal figures who I haven't interviewed before and who aren't currently holding political office that I'd most like to interview: Robert Bork, George Bush Sr., Matt Drudge, Tommy Franks, Newt Gingrich, Jonah Goldberg, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Morris, Margaret Thatcher, & Joe Scarborough. I've tried to get interviews with all of these people except Bush Sr. (I'm waiting until after the election for him) but haven't had any luck. If there are any RWN readers out there who happen to know these people and can put in a good word for me, I'd certainly appreciate it.
-- Here's some interesting polling info: Real Clear Politics lists 42 Bush Vs. Kerry, head to head, polls that occurred from September 1 to the present. Bush won 34, Kerry won 4, and their were 4 ties. So the reality is that Bush is ahead (+5 in latest poll, 3.5 spread over the last 4 polls, 8 wins and 2 ties over the last 10 polls), has been ahead, and will likely stay ahead all the way through November 2nd.
-- The Battleground Polls that came out yesterday are good news for Bush. Michigan (17) now officially appears to be in play & Bush is leading in Iowa (7), Minnesota (10), and Wisconsin (10). If you believe the latest polls, we're getting to the point where Kerry may have to take Florida (which seems to be leaning Bush by a small margin) AND Ohio (which looks like a toss-up right now) to win which is very unlikely. But, while Bush is still in the catbird's seat, it's still too close to call and Kerry could still pull it out.
Undecided Voters Still Distracted By Shiny, Pretty Object By Bob From Accounting
With less than two weeks to the Presidential election, undecided voters, which may constitute as much as 10% of the electorate, have been hounded by candidates, celebrities and even frustrated friends and family members pleading with them to finally make up their minds.
"I'm trying really hard but it's not easy," explained undecided voter Debra Meyers."I watched all three of the debates because my teacher made us, and was about to make a decision but then I saw this really pretty fork sitting on the table. I thought, well that's a really pretty fork and I never noticed it before. It's shiny and silvery and has a nice pattern. I thought to myself, I could just stare at this fork forever. It really screwed up my decision on who to vote for. Then I sort of forgot about it afterwards."
Traditionally, voters who remain uncommitted in the late stages of national elections tend to get distracted easily and have difficulty making other important decisions, like which shoes they should wear or what they need to TiVo while they are in class.
Tim Norwood found himself in a similar dilemma. "I had decided that I was going to vote for Bush because I'm afraid of getting bombed by terrorists and he hates terrorists more than that other guy, but then I looked up to the sky and noticed the sun. It was so big and fiery and orange. I never really looked at it before. Anyway, a few hours later when I was being treated in the hospital for a burn on my cornea, I totally forgot about which candidate I was leaning towards. Now everyone is yelling at me. I'm so confused."
Other undecided voters say that they are purposely waiting to make their final decision until the last minute, and meanwhile, they will enjoy all the attention and gifts they are getting from both candidates.
"I got candy," 70-year-old retiree Jake Ringley said. "I'm leaning towards Kerry because it's... really good candy, like the kind you get at the movie theater. Bush's campaigners just gave me a pamphlet and a pack of smokes."
"Just make up your mind already!" screamed Republican Ben Samuelson. "It's not that difficult. If you want a strong stance against terrorism , vote for Bush, if you want someone to focus on the economy and important social issues here at home, vote for Kerry. Or wait, maybe I have it backwards. Nevermind."
Julie Berman, a volunteer registering voters at a nearby community center said she doesn't want to influence anyone's decision with her own opinion and would be satisfied if people exercised their right to vote -- for either candidate.
"I would never pressure anyone to vote for one candidate over another," Berman said. "As long as they vote I will be happy. If they aren't familiar with the issues or have questions, all they have to do is watch the totally excellent and informative documentary produced by genius filmmaker Michael Moore."
Despite the immense pressure, some voters have managed to ignore the campaign rhetoric and come to a decision based on their own opinions.
"It's been difficult decision but I would like to say that I have finally made up my mind," said one undecided voter. "After a lot of consideration about the issues most important to me, I will vote for--- ooh, look a kitty cat. Hi kitty cat. Look at the pretty kitty cat. Come here pretty witty kitty cat. That's right, you are a pretty, witty kitty cat, Aren't you? Aren't you? Yes you are!

Mark Dubbin, the author of "Shadow Patriot" bought another main page ad on RWN to get the word out about his book. Here's the description of it from Barnes & Noble...
"The events of 9/11 affected many things in New York and the Mafia was no exception. Business suffered for Don Remondini after the attack, but he wasn't about to let it go. The cowards who cost him would receive a message from the Family if he had anything to say about it. They would think twice about their actions in the future. That much was certain.
Jim Pearce is Don Remondini's chief of security. As an Ex-Special Forces sniper, discharged from duty with diabetes, he is assigned to send al-Qaeda a powerful message from the Family. Operating outside the law, and using his CIA contacts, Shadow Patriot is a web of action and intrigue where the guilty will be made to pay, and payback can be a b*tch!"
I've done ads for this book before and one of RWN's readers had actually read the book. Jay said the following,
"I bought it after seeing the link to it on Amazon posted on here last time. The book itself is very short, only about 110 pages I believe. It was a little far fetched, but all in all a very good read."
Here's what a couple of intelligent people on Amazon had to say about the book,
Reviewer:A reader from Las Cruces, NM United States
A wonderful story taking a different approach to the effects of 9/11, and how it was dealt with. Rather than sit back and complain about what happened on that eventful day, a plan was set to take out a terrorist cell. Neat idea and easy flowing writing. Makes for a good, sunny afternoon read.
Reviewer:nicothefabulous from Littleton, CO United States
In a world where justice can be hard to come by, sometimes you have to make your own. Reminds me a bit of The Rocketeer, with the FBI agents and Mafia guys fighting the Nazis side-by-side. Maybe more people with the financial means to do so should take note of this story! I want to see the movie. A classic tale of good old-fashioned American payback.
This book is on my wish list so feel free to buy a copy for me and one for yourself....

The Big 9 States Still In Play For The Presidential Election
With about a week and a half to go until the presidential election, there still appear to be 9 battleground states that could change from red to blue states or vice versa without a landslide win for either side.
Remember that because of the 2000 census, if the states broke just as they did in 2000, Bush would win 278-260 this time. So keep that in mind as you take a look at the 9 states that will likely decide the election this time around...

It has been a while since the last time I ranked my favorite 40 blogs and I thought it was about time to do another ranking.
Do keep in mind that as the quarter has progressed, some blogs have of course moved up and others have dropped, based on how often I visit them, how much I like what I see when I get there, how often the blogs are updated, etc, etc. As per usual, do keep in mind that these sort of lists change frequently over time based on a variety of factors. So don't sweat it if your blog didn't get included.
Also, if there are any other bloggers out there who rank at least 20 favorite blogs or more in order, tonight or tomorrow, and then link back to the post & let me know about it, I'll add a link to your post right here tomorrow night.
Come on folks, let's see how the blogosphere stacks up!
*** Update #1***:Slobokan's Site O'Schtuff has ranked his 30 favorite bloggers (RWN #5). Protein Wisdom ranks his "40 favorite meals, 70s-era TV characters, and shoe sizes over the past 3 months" (I'm not asking).
*** Update #2***: James at Outside The Beltway checks out his "Hawkins Ranking" since 2003. BloggingForBush also ranks the blogs and he ranks RWN #1. Coincidentally ** cough cough **, BloggingforBush is going to be RWN's website of the day tomorrow =D
***Update #3***:Stromata Blog does his own ranking. RWN #17.
A Frank Guide to Preventing Voter Fraud By Frank J.
People are trying to subvert democracy, and it's up to us to stop them. Thus, we need to stop voter fraud. Here are some tips on how to do that:
* Post signs saying, "If You Vote Incorrectly, You Will Be Shot." If someone charges voter intimidation, stare at him menacingly.
* If you see someone trading crack for voter registrations, take the crack away and don't give it back until he apologizes.
* If someone is wearing red, he may be a Communist! Don't let him vote but instead throw him in the pokey.
* Monkeys aren't allowed to vote, so, if you see any monkeys, chase them away! Bad monkeys interfering with democracy!
* A terrorist attack is a great way to distract from an election. If a nuclear bomb goes off, don't take your eyes off that ballot box!
* Yank on everyone's mustaches to make sure no one is trying to vote again with a fake mustache. If someone protests, he must be a fraudster! Into the pokey with him!
* Democrats are known for fraud or just voting wrong, so it's best to just not let them vote.
* Check everyone's ID before letting him or her vote. You can tell if an ID is real if it burns with a blue flame.
* Watch over everyone's shoulders as they vote to make sure they're doing nothing fraudulent. If someone complains, he must be a fraudster! Into the pokey with him.
* If you catch a fraudster, hang him on the spot. His corpse will then discourage others from fraud. If someone complains of voter intimidations, remind the person you have more rope.
* If someone has shifty looking eyes to you, he's probably a fraudster! Better safe than sorry, so throw him in the pokey.
* Everyone should only get one vote. If someone says he won a second vote in a McDonalds giveaway, carefully inspect the free vote card to see if it appears real.
Remember: Democracy is important, so, whenever in doubt, throw someone in the pokey

Are you sick and tired of listening to people compare George Bush to Hitler? Do you want to do something to fight back against all the demonization? Well, let me tell you how to do it.
Take these links I'm about to give you and send them out to your friends.
"...Lynn Faulkner, his daughter, Ashley, and their neighbor, Linda Prince, eagerly waited to shake the president's hand Tuesday at the Golden Lamb Inn. He worked the line at a steady campaign pace, smiling, nodding and signing autographs until Prince spoke:
This girl lost her mom in the World Trade Center on 9-11."
Bush stopped and turned back.
"He changed from being the leader of the free world to being a father, a husband and a man," Faulkner said. "He looked right at her and said, 'How are you doing?' He reached out with his hand and pulled her into his chest."
Faulkner snapped one frame with his camera.
"I could hear her say, 'I'm OK,' " he said. "That's more emotion than she has shown in 21/2 years. Then he said, 'I can see you have a father who loves you very much.' "
"And I said, 'I do, Mr. President, but I miss her mother every day.' It was a special moment."
Special for Lynn Faulkner because the Golden Lamb was the place he and his wife, Wendy Faulkner, celebrated their anniversary every year until she died in the south tower of the World Trade Center, where she had traveled for business.
..."The way he was holding me, with my head against his chest, it felt like he was trying to protect me," Ashley said. "I thought, 'Here is the most powerful guy in the world, and he wants to make sure I'm safe.' I definitely had a couple of tears in my eyes, which is pretty unusual for me."
President Bush spoke to Lindsey Yeskoo, the wife of a U.S. Foreign Service officer, after delivering a speech in Shanghai http://www.snopes.com/glurge/yeskoo.htm
...(Bush) gave a tremendous, candid yet heartening speech, and then was escorted down to the floor to meet the crowds. Everyone was of course behind a tight rope, and there were Secret Service men and security everywhere. There was no way he could meet all, but he sure did a great job of shaking hands with as many as possible.
...Anyway, the three kids and I were in the very front row, and had an extraordinary experience with President Bush. Bush came along and shook Chris's hand first, noticing that he was all dressed up, and said, "You're looking sharp today, boy!" Chris was SO PROUD and SO PLEASED at the recognition (if only GW had known what a struggle I'd had to get him to wear a jacket and a tie!). Then he shook my hand and I told him how much we value his strong leadership at this time, that we are 100% behind him. He went on and took the girls' hands and talked to them.
Then I leaned over and mentioned that we pray for him every day. He stopped dead in his tracks (a definite security NO-NO . . . the SS men got REALLY antsy). He searched my eyes as if to see how much I really meant what I was saying. Then he gave me the most amazing and unexpected personal response, Paul said for a good 20-30 seconds.
He told me what the effect has been on him, waking up every day of the crisis and knowing within himself that he is being faithfully prayed for. He almost pleaded with me not to give up, but to persist with it, for this is only the beginning. Then he looked me even more squarely in my eyes, and gave me a very personal and specific series of instructions about the very things he most needs prayer for, on behalf of himself and of the nation.
He urged me that the threat against America is very great, and that one of our focuses in prayer to God needs to be "the shielding of America" . . . and wisdom for him as he leads the country through this time. I don't know why, but as I looked straight back at him directly into his face, he let me see for those brief moments a tiny part of the agony he himself is going through, and the weariness. He finished the conversation by putting his hand on my right shoulder, almost as if it were the close of a commissioning, but affectionate too in a brotherly sort of way.
...Needless to say, the whole experience was unforgettable. I cannot begin to tell you how deeply it has affected me. Certainly, I do not think I have ever prayed for a leader or government or nation (or world!) so extensively has I have done since then. It was really quite an unusual and unexpected and powerful encounter."
"On our way out of the office we were to leave by the glass doors on the west side of the office. I was the last person in the exit line.
As I shook his hand one final time ... I then did something that surprised even me. I said to him, 'Mr. President, I know you are a busy man and your time is precious. I also know you to be a man of strong faith and I have a favor to ask you.' As he shook my hand he looked me in the eye and said, 'Just name it.'
"I told him that my step-Mom was at that moment in a hospital having a tumor removed from her skull and it would mean a great deal to me if he would consider adding her to his prayers that day. He grabbed me by the arm and took me back toward his desk as he said, 'So that's it. I could tell that something is weighing heavy on your heart today. I could see it in your eyes. This explains it.' From the top drawer of his desk he retrieved a pen and a note card with his seal on it and asked, 'How do you spell her name?'
He then jotted a note to her while discussing the importance of family and the strength of prayer. "When he handed me the card, he asked about the surgery and the prognosis. I told him we were hoping that it is not a recurrence of an earlier cancer and that if it is they can get it all with this surgery. He said, 'If it's okay with you, we'll take care of the prayer right now. Would you pray with me?'
I told him yes and he turned to the staff that remained in the office and hand motioned the folks to step back or leave.
He said, 'Bruce and I would like some private time for a prayer.'
"As they left he turned back to me and took my hands in his. I was prepared to do a traditional prayer stance standing with each other with heads bowed. Instead, he reached for my head with his right hand and pulling gently forward, he placed my head on his shoulder. With his left arm on my mid back, he pulled me to him in a prayerful embrace. He started to pray softly. I started to cry. He continued his prayer for Loretta and for God's perfect will to be done. I cried some more. My body shook a bit as I cried and he just held tighter. He closed by asking God's blessing on Loretta and the family during the coming months.
"I stepped away from our embrace, wiped my eyes, swiped at the tears I'd left on his shoulder, and looked into the eyes of our President.
I thanked him as best I could and told him that my family and I would cntinue praying for him and his family. He has a pile of incredible stuff on his plate each day and yet he is tuned in so well to the here and now that he 'sensed' something heavy on my heart. He took time out of his life to care, to share, and to seek God's blessing for my family..."
"On 9 January 2003, 31-year-old Staff Sergeant Mike McNaughton of Denham Springs, Louisiana, a member of the Louisiana Army National Guard, was serving with the 769th Engineer Battalion in Afghanistan, scouting for land mines. Suddenly, according to Sgt. McNaughton, "I closed my eyes for a second going up in the air and then landing on the ground, and that's when I just — I knew exactly what happened." Sgt. McNaughton had stepped on an anti-personnel mine, and in the resulting blast he lost his right leg, as well as the middle and ring fingers of his right hand and a chunk of his left leg.
...While recuperating at Walter Reed, Sgt. McNaughton was honored to receive a visit from President Bush. One of the subjects of common interest they discussed was running, and the President extended an invitation to Sgt. McNaughton to come running with him once he was up and about.
....April 2004, Sgt. McNaughton and his family made the trip to Washington, and — true to his word — the President went for a run with him. According to Baton Rouge television station WAFB, Sgt. McNaughton described his return visit with President Bush thusly:
"It rained a little bit. I didn't care if it was storming or lightning all around, I didn't care. It was nice to run with him.
"He has a weight room upstairs, in the White House. We worked out for about 45 minutes, we tried different equipment. He said I couldn't do it, so I had to prove him wrong.
"This goes back to my military training. I never once stopped something and said I can't do it or quit. Just because I lost my leg, why should I start now?"
Sergeant McNaughton says the president was more interested with his new leg than even his own children. McNaughton says the president couldn't stop looking at it or asking questions about it."
".... (W)hen the (Ron Ginther) was killed by mortar fire last month, Donna Ginther worried how she would carry on without her husband. She was terrified her daughter would grow up to be a different adult without Ginther to lead the way.
Donna Ginther told President George W. Bush about her fears Wednesday when he met with families of fallen servicemen following a speech to troops at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.
"When I told him that, he pressed his forehead against mine and said, `You can do it, and we'll all help you through it,"' she said.
Donna Ginther took his words to heart.
"It wasn't something he was saying to make me feel better. Like trying to pacify me and walk away and forget it," she said. "He wasn't afraid to touch you. It wasn't like he was better than us. He kissed us. He cried with us. When I was crying, he cried."
Ron Payne of Lakeland was just as taken with Bush.
Payne lost his son, 23-year-old Ron Payne, last month during an ambush in Afghanistan.
Payne saw a sensitive president when Bush tried to comfort a distraught father during his meeting with grieving families.
"President Bush just kept hugging him and hugging him," Payne said. "He came across as very personable, a caring man. I didn't see any politics in any of this. I was very, very impressed." Bush talked separately with each of the 10 families, going over the contributions of young men like the 6-foot-7 Ron Payne who played basketball for Mulberry High.
Bush posed for pictures and signed autographs. Payne gave him a photo of his son, and Bush took it with him. The president said he was going to put it in his library.
"He was very compassionate with everyone," Payne said. "He said, `I want to cry with you, laugh with you. Take as much time as you need. We'll shed tears. If you want to, laugh. I'm here for you."
Lakeland's Kathy Seymour, Ron Payne's mother, was overwhelmed by Bush's gesture of support.
The mother had gone to Tampa not knowing what she might say, admitting beforehand that she was torn about the role of American military in the Middle East.
"He (Bush) just hugged me, patted me on the back and told me to hang in there. And said he was sorry for my loss . . .," Seymour said. "A lot of the mothers cried. And wives, they cried. Nobody yelled. Nobody was angry. In fact it went really well."
Seymour said she was touched by Bush's sincerity, concern and sympathy. And his teary eyes.
"I feel a little bit better now," she said.
Bush also managed to lighten Donna Ginther's burden.
He did it by not only offering help but by making her daughter happy.
President Bush made his way over to Alayna and...said he hoped she had a happy birthday.
After listening to President Bush talk about fighting terrorists on their turf, Donna Ginther said she better understood why her husband was so determined to go to Iraq because he also thought it might prevent another 9/11.
"She (Alayna) was telling me on the way home, `I'm so proud of Daddy," and I said, `Yes, he's a hero," Donna Ginther said. "And she said, `I'm proud of him because he let us meet the president.'
"I said, `He sent (Bush) right to us, and she said, `He knew we needed somebody like him in our lives.' And it's true."
George W. Bush saluted an Army officer who had been badly injured during the September 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon http://www.snopes.com/glurge/birdwell.htm
"As you may know, the President and Mrs. Bush visited the Washington Burn Center on Friday 14 September. Among those they visited was LTC Brian Birdwell, who was badly burned in the Pentagon attack. Mrs. Bush went into Brian's room, spoke to him for about a minute, all the time as if they had been long acquaintances. She then turned to Brian's wife Mel, who at this time had been at the hospital for probably 2 1/2 days, and apparently, according to Mel herself, was dirty, grimy and had blood on her shirt.
Mrs. Bush hugged Mel for what Mel said seemed like an eternity, just as if Mel were one of her closest family members.
Mrs. Bush then told Brian and Mel that there was "someone" there to see him.
The President then walked in, stood by Brian's bedside, asked Brian how he was doing, told him that he was very proud of them both and that they were his heroes.
The President then saluted Brian. Now, at this point in time, Brian is bandaged up pretty well. His hands are burned very badly as well as the back of him from the head down. His movements were very restricted.
Upon seeing the President saluting him, Brian began to slowly return the salute, taking, from the accounts so far, about 15-20 seconds to get his hand up to his head.
During all of this, 15-20 seconds, President Bush never moved, never dropped his salute. The President dropped his salute only when Brian was finished with his, and then gave Mel a huge hug for what also probably seemed like an eternity.
Pray for our leadership. Thank God for what we are, have, and will be.
As a note to those of you who might not be familiar with military protocol, the subordinate normally initiates a salute and will hold it until the superior officer returns the salute.
In the above incident, President Bush acted in the role of the subordinate to show his respect and high regard for the injured man.
...Birdwell's older brother, Wade, also confirmed the story via e-mail:
"I cannot tell you how grateful and truly proud I am that when Brian started to return that salute, despite his wounds, the president held his salute firmly and thereby permitted my brother the honor of demonstrating his and the true character of so very many others of our fighting men and women. Indeed, you should know that it was this very character that likely saved Brian's life in the first place. As Brian crawled through the fire, certain brave men and women pulled him from the carnage, carried him out to the parking lot, then into the adjoining street."
These are just a few little stories, but I think they tell you a lot about the man.....
Zzzzzz.....must beat the Russians into Berlin.....zzzzzz....I'm going to personally shoot that paper hanging son of a gun Hitler.....zzzzz.....Better a German battalion in front of me than a French battalion behind me.....zzzzz
"The Rock Hill (South Carolina) Police Department is investigating why an officer used an electric stun gun on a 75-year-old woman who refused to leave a nursing home where she had gone to visit an ailing friend.
The woman, Margaret Kimbrell, said she suffered bruises on her leg and face after she was knocked to the floor by the force of the weapon, called a Taser.
Police Chief John Gregory said Tuesday the department is reviewing whether Officer Hattie Macon's use of the Taser was appropriate -- a step that is taken in unusual or high-profile cases.
"On face value, it looks like it was," he said. "We have a person who was asked to leave, who refused and who attempted to assault the officer."
Gregory did not say when the review would be completed. Kimbrell said Tuesday she's considering legal action against the department.
Kimbrell went to EdenGardens of Rock Hill, a retirement home on Constitution Boulevard, Friday evening to visit a friend who was scheduled to have colon surgery this week, she said.
Soon after she arrived, a staff member called police to have her removed for trespassing. A relative of the friend told an EdenGardens administrator she did not want Kimbrell there, said Larry Boesen, the home's executive director.
Police and Kimbrell offer two different versions of what happened after police arrived.
According to the police report, Kimbrell was sitting in a chair in a waiting area when Macon, 35, ordered her to leave several times. Kimbrell refused, jerking her arms away when Macon tried to lead her toward the door.
Police say Kimbrell eventually got up but walked toward the cafeteria after spotting someone she knew. At that point, the officer blocked Kimbrell and told her she was under arrest. Kimbrell then swung her arm at the officer, according to the police report.
That's when Macon used the Taser and placed Kimbrell under arrest.
Kimbrell on Tuesday disagreed with that version of events.
She said she did not swing her arm or threaten Macon.
"As weak as I am, how could I do that?" said Kimbrell, who has arthritis and suffered six broken ribs in a recent fall in her back yard. "Maybe I was trespassing, but I didn't know it. I thought they would understand."
I know, I know...you're thinking,
"Hawkins, she's 75 years old and she has broken ribs! You can't use a taser on a 75 year-old woman! That's just wrong".
Look, I understand that if at all possible, you go easy on the woman because of her age and her injuries. However, you have to look at this from the policeman's point of view. Her job is to enforce the law. She can't just say,
"Yes, I know this woman is breaking the law, but she's 75 years old and feeble, so there's nothing I can do about it".
So how is this cop going to deal with this woman who's trespassing, refusing to come along peacefully after she has been arrested, & attempting to assault her? Should she have slapped a chokehold on her? Given her a couple of whacks with a billy club? Tossed her on the ground like Pedro Martinez did to Don Zimmer? No, she did what she was trained to do; she tased her, took her down, and arrested her.
Did she deserve that? Yes, she brought what happened to her down on her own head and the only reason anyone is even questioning it is because of her age. I mean think about it: if she were 30 years old, would anybody care? What about 40? 50? At what age are you supposed to be allowed to assault a police officer without serious consequences?
As far as I'm concerned, there is no such age.
*** Update #1: Whoops! Turns out the police officer in question is female. I corrected the post to reflect that. Other than that, the content remains unchanged.
Bush Secret Plan to Draft Elderly Revealed By Scott Ott
Previously unseen documents released by the Kerry-Edwards campaign today reveal a secret Bush administration plan to draft the elderly into military service.
"If George W. Bush wins this election, I warn you that he will kill two birds with one stone," said John Forbes Kerry, the Democrat presidential candidate. "He'll bail out Social Security by sending our nation's grandparents to the front lines in Iraq to die in the wrong war."
Mr. Kerry, who is also a U.S. Senator, said, "Senior citizens are patriotic, plentiful and many of them still have their old military uniforms and vintage rifles from World War II and Korea. It's a cynical scheme, and that's why this administration is hiding it until January."
According to details of the secret Bush plan, backdoor-drafted National Guard and Reserve troops will come home rapidly as they're replaced by five divisions of combat-ready "geriatric GIs."
To date, the Pentagon has not specifically denied the existence of the alleged secret plan dubbed 'Operation Joint Replacement.'
President Bush, asked to respond to the Kerry allegation during a campaign stop, said, "This is the first I've heard of it. But we don't need to draft our seniors. If we'd let 'em, they'd volunteer. Next question."

Why John Kerry Shouldn't Be President -- In Quotes
John Kerry In Vietnam: A Record To Run On Or From?
-- "There are all kinds of atrocities, and I would have to say that, yes, yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed in that I took part in shootings in free fire zones. I conducted harassment and interdiction fire. I used 50 calibre machine guns, which we were granted and ordered to use, which were our only weapon against people. I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages. All of this is contrary to the laws of warfare, all of this is contrary to the Geneva Conventions and all of this is ordered as a matter of written established policy by the government of the United States from the top down." -- John Kerry, April 18, 1971
-- "To attempt to justify the loss of one American life in Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos by linking such loss to the preservation of freedom...is to us the height of criminal hypocrisy." -- John Kerry, 1971
-- "During Lt.(jg) Kerry's tour, he was under my command for two or three specific operations, before his rapid exit. Trust, loyalty and judgment are the key, operative words. His turncoat performance in 1971 in his grubby shirt and his medal-tossing escapade, coupled with his slanderous lines in the recent book portraying us that served, including all POWs and MIAs, as murderous war criminals, I believe, will have a lasting effect on all military veterans and their families. Kerry would be described as devious, self-absorbing, manipulative, disdain for authority, disruptive, but the most common phrase that you'd hear is 'requires constant supervision.'" -- Captain Charles Plumly, USN (retired), (Swift Boat Veterans For Truth)
-- "John Kerry's recent admissions caused me to realize that I was most likely in Vietnam dodging enemy rockets on the very day he met in Paris with Madame Binh, the representative of the Viet Cong to the Paris Peace Conference. John Kerry returned to the U.S. to become a national spokesperson for the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, a radical fringe of the antiwar movement, an organization set upon propagating the myth of war crimes through demonstrably false assertions. Who was the last American POW to die languishing in a North Vietnamese prison forced to listen to the recorded voice of John Kerry disgracing their service by his dishonest testimony before the Senate?" -- John O'Neill in May, 2004 (Swift Boat Veterans For Truth)
-- "More Than any other person, John Kerry is responsible for the false image of Vietnam veterans as dysfunctional misfits. Kerry betrayed all of us when he returned from Vietnam." -- Retired U.S. Navy SEAL captain with service in Vietnam, John Bailey
-- "In 1971, when John Kerry spoke out to America, labeling all Vietnam veterans as thugs and murderers, I was shocked and almost brought to my knees, because even though I had served at the same time and same unit, I had never witnessed or participated in any of the events that the Senator had accused us of. I strongly believe that the statements made by the Senator were not only false and inaccurate, but extremely harmful to the United States' efforts in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. Tragically, some veterans, scorned by the antiwar movement and their allies, retreated to a life of despair and suicide. Two of my crewmates were among them. For that there is no forgiveness. " -- Richard O'Mara (Swift Boat Veterans For Truth)
-- "I served in Vietnam as a boat officer from June of 1968 to July of 1969. My service was three months in Coastal Division 13 out of Cat Lo, and nine months with Coastal Division 11 based in An Thoi. John Kerry was in An Thoi the same time I was. I'm here today to express the anger I have harbored for over 33 years, about being accused with my fellow shipmates of war atrocities. All I can say is when I leave here today, I'm going down to the Wall to tell my two crew members it's not true, and that they and the other 49 Swiftees who are on the Wall were then and are still now the best." -- Robert Brant (Swift Boat Veterans For Truth

Those who agree with me understand why. Those who disagree with me understand why. For those who don't know me, let me tell you why.
George W. Bush thinks the best defense against terrorism is a good offense. Hitting them before they hit us seems to be a pretty effective strategy. It's a strategy we should've undertaken 11 years ago. It's a strategy our opponents really didn't think we'd ever take.
George W. Bush agreed with all those, on the Left and the Right, who came before him and declared Saddam Hussein a threat to the world. And he took action. Despite an uphill battle, roller coaster polls and some so-called allies who were conspiring with the enemy to prevent us from taking the necessary action. It's a stand our opponents thought we'd lose.
George W. Bush recognizes the need to let hard working Americans keep more of what they earn. He understands that people can't help the needy when they're struggling to pay their tax bill to fund inefficient and ineffective government programs. He fought like hell to get the tax package passed, even while his opposition fought like hell against it. It's an effort his opponents thought would cost him.
George W. Bush sees the wisdom in not discriminating against Faith-based organizations when handing out federal money just because his opponents position it as some hostile religious takeover over the government while still maintaining they, themselves are religious. It's a cause his opponents thought he would have to abandon.
George W. Bush sees the promise of stem-cell research, but understands the potential cost as well. Even while his opponents mischaracterize the debate, he presses on, being the first President to support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research at all. It's an issue on which his opponents thought they could shake him.
George W. Bush knows that we're all Americans and as such, we should all be afforded an equal opportunity. His opponents still call him racist, despite the fact his success in diversity is measured by powerful blacks, not a simple slogan of black power. It's a vision his opponents thought wouldn't work.
George W. Bush sees the abortion issue as affecting more than just one life. It's a fact his opponents try to deny.
George W. Bush understands that September 11th changed this country, for better and worse. he acknowledges that we have to enact protection while maintaining the freedoms that make this country great. He also understands that common sense should prevail over political correctness. Pandering should never replace true respect for those who are different. It's a concept his opponents still haven't learned.
George W. Bush has seen the impact of real education reform. He knows that simple social promotion isn't real education. He sees the value true learning can have on the American spirit. He believes in our citizens armed with the power of knowledge. It's an issue his opponents thought they owned.
George W. Bush gets it when it comes to Social Security. He understands that in the private sector, such a ponzi scheme would result in jailtime for those perpetrating it. He knows the plan won't be available for folks my age, so he wants to give us an option of preparing ourselves for retirement, the old fashioned way - personal responsibility. It's an issue his opponents try to capitalize on.
George W. Bush doesn't think a government-run healthcare system is the best answer and all he has to do is point at most every other government program to prove it will be a failure. He understands that the best way to make healthcare affordable is to reduce the lottery-ticket-litigation. It's an issue his opponents are intimate with.
George W. Bush recognizes the need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil - for security and financial reasons. He understands there are places in the U.S. that could be used for supplies. It's an issue his opponents don't understand.
George W. Bush says that it is his faith that sustains him. He says it's his faith that guides his decisions. He's not ashamed to spread the joy of his faith and not afraid to ask for prayers from others. It's a gift his opponents try to hide.
George W. Bush is not afraid to be himself, even if it costs some political points. He knows the real heart and soul of America. He believes America must seize this moment in history and America must lead. He knows we must give our prosperity a greater purpose, a purpose of peace and freedom and hope. He knows we're a great nation of good and loving people.
And he knows we have a charge to keep.

The editorial board of The New York Times Monday issued its second endorsement of John Forbes Kerry in as many days.
The Times said the latest endorsement is part of a periodic series of articles which have appeared in various sections of the newspaper throughout the campaign.
Here are some excerpts from the latest Times editorial titled "John Forbes Kerry: Decidedly Different":
"In the journalistic tradition of full disclosure, we need to acknowledge the political bias of the editorial staff at The New York Times. A recent in-house poll shows that 97 percent of our news department tried to vote for Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election, but they were disenfranchised because of trifling concerns about their criminal records and other nonsense about being at the wrong polling place or not having genuine identification. (Although it should be noted that our staff had no trouble using their IDs to buy some fine, vintage Chinese communist automatic weapons at a local gun show.) The Bush administration and its co-conspirators at local polling places have a dark record of treating felons as if they're criminals."
"We believe John Forbes Kerry has the experience it will take to sit at the table with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and acquire the necessary permissions for America to carry out her foreign policy objectives."
"One wrestles with how best to describe Mr. Kerry; a seasoned, steady, accomplished man who cuts a dashing figure as he snowboards and bikes across the American political landscape. He's a career Vietnam veteran, distinguished war protestor, protector and resuscitator of family rodents, loving husband of two women with whom he shared the burden of enormous wealth, friend of downtrodden trial lawyers and, to a certain extent, he is also a U.S. Senator."
"He's a profoundly moral man, yet a man who never lets his morality dictate his policies. Like John F. Kennedy, Mr. Kerry won't be a Roman Catholic president, he'll be a president who says that he's a Roman Catholic."
"Perhaps the most impressive feature of Mr. Kerry's campaign can be encapsulated in a single sentence: 'I have a plan.' With that uncharacteristically succinct quartet of monosyllabic words, he has captured the imagination of the nation in a fashion reminiscent of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."
Future President Kerry has a plan for every aspect of American life, including...
* rolling back tax cuts to ease the guilt of small business people by allowing them to cover more of the federal government's expenses,
* getting back President Clinton's $5.6 trillion budget surplus by reinstituting the 1990s-era irrational exuberance,
* removing the last stains of market forces from the health care system to prevent patients from being rushed into surgical procedures without the months of contemplation enjoyed by our Canadian and European friends,
* bringing home our backdoor-drafted National Guard and Reserve troops and replacing them with French and German soldiers eager to experience the glory of fighting the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time,
* bypassing the six-nation talks on North Korean nuclear weapons which have done nothing but isolate Kim Jong Il from his neighbors and allies, and launching bilateral talks between President Kerry and the "Dear Leader," in a fashion reminiscent of Madeleine Albright, thereby winning Mr. Kim's trust.
"For all these crises and more, Mr. Kerry has a plan. We know that it's a great plan, because he can't tell us what it is until he sits in the Oval Office. It's a very presidential plan. It's not a mere legislative plan, otherwise Mr. Kerry would have introduced it as a bill during his 19 years in the senate. No, this plan is something grand, something majestic, something unexpected, mysterious and special. Frankly, we sit on the edge of our seats, eager to hear the details of the plan from the architect himself during his first televised address from behind the big desk at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."
"This is perhaps the ultimate reason why Mr. Kerry must be elected. If America fails him at the ballot box and sends him back to finish his final term as senator, we will never get to hear the plan. It's just not the kind of plan you can talk about in the senate."
"To sum up, Mr. Kerry is decidedly different than President Bush.
He knows all of the things this administration has done wrong.
Mr. Kerry will not do those things.
He will do other things--things that are right.
That's the plan.
That's why you should vote to elect John Forbes Kerry the 44th president of the United States."
-- "I'm John Forbes Kerry, and I approve of this message."

The Democratic Underground Post Of The Day: Welcome To The DU's "Reality".
As the election draws near, the Michael Moore wing of the Democratic Party is still going as strong as ever. The evidence? A thread from the Democratic Underground Forums (a website that used to be linked from John Kerry's official blog by the way) entitled "Is our nation as f*cked up as it seems to those of us here in reality?"
Remember, as you read these DU loons talking about "reality" as they see it, that some people with this sort mentality will end up in the White House if John Kerry becomes President. Heheh, that's a comforting thought huh? =D...
milkyway: "Is our nation as f*cked up as it seems to those of us here in reality? To most of us in the reality-based community, it's puzzling that bush still has a chance to win a second term. His record has been one of total and catastrophic failure, from national security (incredibly, 3,000 dead civilians), to the economy (it has sucked for four years), to foreign policy (the Iraq debacle, for which we will be suffering the blowback consequences for decades), to our national spirit (divided and anxiety-ridden), to our place in the world (the most hated nation since Hitler's Germany). bush tacitly admitted as much during the last debate when he bizarrely answered most every question by bragging about the passage of NCLB, the only thing he could find that might be perceived as a success (which it wasn't).
...I live in Manhattan, and I'm well aware that we are quite different than Middle America. But can it really be true that almost half of our citizens would blindly follow a failed man into the cataclysmic darkness? Is this the United States of America anymore? The founding of our democracy and our constitution were based on reason and the fallibility of authority. I know plenty of religious people here in New York, of all faiths, but none that would view a president as a messiah.
bush seems more a cult leader than a president of the United States. Those around him must be sycophants, or they end up resigning. His campaign appearances can only be attended by the fawning faithful. If bush were to get a second term, would those of us that live in the reality community be overwhelmed by the fabricated version of existence? Along with our democracy, would reality itself cease to exist, only a dreamworld in the minds of the uninitiated?
Is george bush our nation's Jim Jones?"
natrat:"carefully indeed. notice they had to kill a senator to lock up the senate."
MnFats:"One could compare the WMDs bulls***t to the burning of the Reichstag....and before long, does anyone doubt, we could see a few bodies in Iranian army uniforms turn up at the scene of some phony "battle" or attack on U.S. troops....months or years later, after Bush invades Iran, DNA tests tell us those bodies were those of "unlawful combatants" who disappeared in the early days of the Iraq War.
No, no, of course that's not possible. That's a ridiculous idea."
Zhade:"Actually, I'm pretty sure that *9/11* was the burning of the Reichstag."
Pachamama:"Which is why many people I know (myself included)seriously are considering moving from the United States if * has another term....I think things could get dangerous, not because we are criminals, but rather part of the intelligensia and folks who have been willing to question and challenge this administration and the media whores and anyone propping them up....I fear that a 2nd term will be their real "mandate" to step up their plans and they will have specific plans for people who dare to dissent...."
Hell Hath No Fury:"I've seen those ladies at the Bush rallies.
When I see them, I immediately flash back to a piece of footage I have seen over the years of a Hitler rally.
In it a young, blonde-haired, audience member is seen staring into the camera with a look that can only be describes as ecstatic. Her light eyes and face are literally aglow as she cheers on Hitler's speech.
For me, she has always represented something that I never understood about Germany and its people during that time. How do you get there? How do you get to the place where you willingly and joyfully embrace madness? Flash-forward 70 years and there is an American woman, her eyes and face literally aglow as she cheers on Bush's speech.
How do you get to that place? After 3+ years of Bush, I'm afraid that I now understand."
Nordic:"The American people have been a big disappointment the last 4 years the fact that almost half of my fellow Americans are a bunch of scaredy-cats willing to destroy the country for the sake of a fantasy "safety" and willing to simply go massacre millions of brown-skinned muslims just because, well, it was brown-skinned muslims who "got us" on 9/11 .....
Well it's disgusting. These Americans aren't worthy of the name. They are cowardly blowhards who aren't even willing to do the hard work themselves. Let somebody else go over there and do the killin'.
The last four years have made me pretty misanthropic.
The good people seem to be in a minority.
And don't even get me started on the media's role in all of this."
Dr_eldritch:"Here's a tinfoil hat issue...IMHO - There will be only one way to garner support to invade yet another couple of countries.
A one meg nuke popped off in a mediocre American city.
-Not as devestating as the Trade Center, but psychologically terrifying enough that Americans will go along with any PNAC plan."
The Straight Story:"It won't be a bomb - a new virus. Think 'The Stand'. Something which they will think they can control, and will already have a cure for. Let it loose for awhile. Economy tanks, wide spread panic and fear, martial law. Trace virus to iran or somewhere, and the wars continue. Promise the limited produced cure first to those who join the armed forces.
A stretch to be sure. But still sits in my mind as but one possible scenario."
grannylib:"Yeah and I wonder who the BushCo freaks will recruit this time to enact such a plan, to give them their 'reason' for retaliating against the wrong people?
The more I read about 9/11 the more I am totally convinced that the 9/11 commission is just as corrupt as the Warren commission, and that this misadministration LIHOP if not MIHOP, and would not hesitate to do it again if it would enable them to retain power.
These 'people' are NOT to be trusted. I am really beginning to think they are NOT human - no decent person with a heart/soul/conscience could POSSIBLY act the way the BushCo freaks do."
Since Kerry's "Mary Cheney remark" has gotten -- and continues to get -- so much ink, I thought it might be worthwhile to do a quick wrap-up on the subject.
The reason Kerry's debate caught everyone's eye is because John Edwards inserted Mary Cheney into his debate with Dick Cheney and everybody noticed it because although Cheney was gracious about it, he also declined to rebut Edwards comments rather than continue to drag his daughter into the spotlight. Saturday Night Live even focused on that when they did their parody of the debate.
Had that been all that happened, it would have probably ended there.
But then, when Kerry AGAIN mentioned Mary Cheney in his debate with Bush, it really stood out. And of course, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Kerry and Edwards were mentioning that Mary Cheney was gay in an effort to appeal to any homophobes who wouldn't vote for a man with a gay daughter.
Using a child against her father that way quite understandably didn't sit well with voters and the fact that John Edwards' wife really got nasty about it while Kerry's campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill called Mary Cheney "fair game" didn't help.
Kerry and Edwards should have just left Mary Cheney out of it.

Vladimir Putin spells out the painfully obvious truth...
"Any unbiased observer understands that attacks of international terrorist organizations in Iraq, especially nowadays, are targeted not only and not so much against the international coalition as against President Bush," Putin said.
"International terrorists have set as their goal inflicting the maximum damage to Bush, to prevent his election to a second term.
"If they succeed in doing that, they will celebrate a victory over America and over the entire anti-terror coalition," Putin said.
"In that case, this would give an additional impulse to international terrorists and to their activities, and could lead to the spread of terrorism to other parts of the world."
This is going to really chafe liberals and even some of the conservatives reading today will find this harsh, but I'm going to say it anyway because it's absolutely true. If John Kerry wins, many of the same people who celebrated the 9/11 attacks against America will celebrate again. That's because getting an appeaser like John Kerry in the White House would be the best thing to happen to America hating terrorists since 9/11.
"The Defiance County Sheriff's Office...alleges that (Chad) Staton filled out over 100 voter registration forms that were fictitious. Staton was to be paid for each registration form that he could get citizens to fill out. However, Staton himself filled out the registrations and returned them to the woman who hired him from Toledo, Ohio. Deputies allege that Staton was paid crack cocaine for the falsified registrations.
Defiance Deputies along with Toledo Police Department detectives conducted a search warrant of a residence on Woodland in Toledo, believed to be the home of the woman who hired Staton to solicit voter registration. Officers confiscated drug paraphernalia along with voter registration forms from the home. The occupant of the home, Georgianne Pitts, age 41, advised law enforcement, along with Ohio B.C.I.&I., that she had been recruited by Thaddeus J. Jackson, II, of Cleveland, to obtain voter registrations. Pitts admitted to paying Staton crack cocaine for the registrations in lieu of money.
A business card provided by Pitts indicated that Jackson is the Assistant NVF Ohio Director of the NAACP National Voter Fund."
This may turn out to be one of the more bizarre political stories of this election cycle....

The Volokh Conspiracy runs down Kerry's unimpressive 20 year career in the Senate. Mediocrity, John Kerry is thy name...
The Bush campaign's backup lists five bills, which we verified:
S.791: Authorizes $53 million over four years to provide grants to woman-owned small businesses. (1999)
S.1206: Names a federal building in Waltham, Massachusetts after Frederick C. Murphy, who was killed in action during World War II and awarded (posthumously) the Medal of Honor. (1994)
S.1636: A save-the-dolphins measure aiming "to improve the program to reduce the incidental taking of marine mammals during the course of commercial fishing operations." (1994)
S.1563: Funding the National Sea Grant College Program, which supports university-based research, public education, and other projects "to promote better understanding, conservation and use of America's coastal resources." (1991)
S.423: Granting a visa and admission to the U.S. as a permanent resident to Kil Joon Yu Callahan. (1987)
The Bush campaign left out two bills authored by Kerry which passed the Senate and later became law in a slightly different form approved by the House, under the same titles and mostly same substance. (This occurs when House and Senate versions differ so slightly that one house adopts the other's version rather than go to the trouble of a House-Senate conference to work out a compromise.) How can people even consider a man with a record like this for the most important job on earth? It's like hiring a kid who chopped up a couple of frogs in science class as a brain surgeon...
Do you want to know the moment I knew I was going to go see " Team America: World Police" at the theater? It was when I heard that in the movie, Kim Jong-Il dumped that prattling Euroweenie Hans Blix into a shark tank. You know why? Because any movie that considers Blix irritating enough to be dumped into a shark tank and is smart enough to figure out that Kim Jong-Il would have no problem actually doing it if he could get away with it, is a film that at least in the larger sense, likely has a good grasp of the war on terrorism.
And after watching "Team America: World Police," I can tell you that this is a dream movie for South Park Republicans who support fighting the war on terrorism & love to watch liberals being mocked mercilessly, but who also aren't all that offended by obscenity and well...puppet boinking =D
The movie opens with "Team America" showing up in France to eradicate Muslim terrorists (yes, they didn't chicken out and replace them with Europeans like so many other movies have done) who're planning to detonate WMDs in France. In the process of wiping out the terrorists, an oblivious Team America also obliterates the Eiffel Tower, the Arc d’Triomphe, and the Louvre. I think that's supposed to be the obligatory jab towards conservatives to even things out, but personally it just reminded me of when our planes "accidentally" ** cough cough ** blew up the French embassy while we were bombing Libya back in the Reagan administration .
Anyway, the bad guys in this movie are Kim Jong-Il, hordes of nameless terrorists, and clueless liberals like Alec Baldwin, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Danny Glover, Janeane Garofalo who are all part of the "Film Actors Guild". Kim Jong-Il plots to blow up the world w/ the aid of the terrorists and the actors, because of their rabid hatred of America and naivete, unwittingly aid him in his plot.
Incidentally folks, judging by the audience at the theater where I saw the movie, we conservatives aren't the only ones who find the politicking of these dimwitted, celebrity, liberals to be annoying. Each time a celebrity was blown away, the audience LAUGHED and at one point (I don't want to give too much away), when a particular celebrity was machine gunned out of a window to her death, the audience actually APPLAUDED.
But, I don't want to give you the idea that I liked the movie just because it favored "my side" politically. This was one of...wait, that's not good enough...this was "THE", funniest movie I've ever seen. I kid you not -- during this movie I laughed out loud time and time again. As a matter of fact, I laughed so hard that my eyes actually teared up 2 or 3 times. At one point, I had to actually STOP MYSELF from laughing because I was guffawing so loudly at how a particular character looked (when Gary was going to try to "act" his way into the terrorist hideout in Egypt) that I thought people might turn around and look at me. I shouldn't have worried about it, because from what I could tell, the rest of audience was laughing just as much as I was.
But what was so funny? The music for one thing. If you're like me, you will be singing "America, F**k Yeah" to yourself when you leave the theater. Furthermore, while using puppets would seem to be a huge weakness for the film, there was so much superb physical comedy in the film that relied on the jerky movements of the puppets that the fact puppets were used was a big PLUS, not a minus. A prime example of that was the super raunchy puppet sex scene, which was breathtakingly hilarious because it featured two puppets going at it like porn stars. Then there was the gut-busting dialogue, which even featured a pretty good basic -- although crude & scatological -- explanation of the role liberals, conservatives, and thugs like Kim Jong-Il play in the war on terrorism.
So the movie is incredibly funny, but will it be a box office smash? That's hard to say. I mean, never before has there been a crude comedy featuring puppets that takes a hawkishly conservative view of foreign policy and ruthlessly mocks self-important Hollywood liberals as useful idiots for a poofy haired, Commie, nutjob like Kim Jong-Il. So would the sort of conservative who would enjoy watching a club full of terrorists get wiped out also think it was hilarious to watch a puppet vomit? That's a question for the ages =D However personally, on a scale of 1-10, I'd give this movie a 14. It's "Something About Mary" + "Clerks" + "Southpark: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut" all rolled into one side-splitting package. So let's just call it a thumbs up so high that it's scraping the ceiling....
Kerry Pushes Plan to Re-Import Canadian Bacon By Scott Ott
Under a plan proposed by Democrat presidential contender John Forbes Kerry, Americans could save billions of dollars each year on the purchase of over-the-counter bacon.
"I have a plan to get every American hooked on Canadian bacon," said Mr. Kerry during a campaign stop in Jacksonville, Oregon. "All we need to do is get American farmers to export their hogs to Canada, where the government could impose price controls, then we re-import the processed Canadian bacon to the United States at prices lower than those available here on ordinary bacon."
Mr. Kerry's Bring Home the Canadian Bacon plan has ignited almost as much enthusiasm across the United States as his plan to re-import American prescription drugs from Canada.
"The reason these plans work," said Mr. Kerry, who is also a U.S. Senator, "is because they give us the best of both systems--capitalism and socialism. American companies do the risky work of developing these products, and then we allow Canada's government to control how much profit they make. The bottom line: when American companies make smaller profits, their workers will have less money. And that's why they'll need cheaper drugs and bacon."
President George Bush, asked to respond to the Kerry plan, said, "Canadian bacon--what's that? Do the pigs speak French? Next question."
