The SarahPAC ad
What a great piece. Terrific public relations. I’m not sure whether referring to the ad’s target group — women — as a stampeding herd of pink elephants is quite the right way to go, but it’s just one tiny bit, and the ad is so good overall, and it’s a woman saying it, after all.
Surely she’ll get a pass.
And it does fit with the whole “mama grizzly” theme. You don’t want to make an elephant mad, either.
The accompanying article describes the ad as:
Titled “Mama Grizzlies,” the ad doesn’t endorse any specific candidate, but rather seeks to build up the Palin image as a fiercely independent mom who isn’t going to stand by and let the government run her down.
But seems to find it strange that:
But she doesn’t mention any specific candidates in the ad, nor is she pictured with any. Instead it shows footage of Palin with women at tea party rallies and at her speeches.
I’m not sure why the writer expected it to include any candidates. It could have. Sure. But that clearly wasn’t the purpose of the ad. This piece is looking to rally women who either are or think they might be dissatisfied with the way things are going. It’s appealing to the mother’s instinct: no, there’s no immediate danger to your family, but the overall direction of our country is going to hurt your family – your children – sooner or later.
And the ad casts Palin in the forefront of that. As Sarah promotion, this is awesome…if it can find an audience wider than Facebook and conservative blogs (maybe even if it can’t). As a wider movement-building effort…well, it’ll have to be a single shot in a broader offensive for that.
Caveat: unless the whole idea is just to secure Palin’s popularity among already-conservative women. In that case, bingo. At least, from this man’s perspective.
