Arab Spring, Take Two

When the Arab Spring struck Egypt just a couple of years ago, it was hailed by many as a great day.:  Democracy, they said, had finally arrived in Egypt, and it didn’t matter that they were replacing a US-friendly dictator with an anti-US radical Islamic regime.

But now it seems that Egypt has made no progress at all.:  While the Obama administration has done everything it could to prop up the new Egyptian dictatorship, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, plus multiple donations of advanced military hardware…quite interesting behavior coming from the political party that gets off on showing pictures of Republicans hanging out with Saddam Hussein back when he was America’s favorite dictator.:  In fact, there are so many historical examples proving that supporting Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood regime is a bad idea, it’s rather remarkable that President Obama has gotten away with it thus far.:  But then, the Left has always been rather selective in its application of historical lessons.

Today, the mobs are back.:  The people of Cairo have been discontented since their great democratic experiment, as the Muslim Brotherhood government has been extremely lacking in bringing back infrastructure and civilization to that once-great city.:  Pictures brought back by photojournalists show a city in ruins – a third-world hellhole.:  It seems that the millions provided by the Brotherhood’s friends in the United States were not being spent for the good of the Egyptian people.

The big question is how long it will take before the Left starts lauding these new protests like they applauded the previous disorder.:  But no matter what they may say, this is not what democracy looks like – it is mob rule.

But mob rule always seems to fit into the Democrats’ definition of “democracy,” which changes with whatever definition they want it to fit at the time.:  Take the recent events in Texas, for example.:  Lawmakers in Texas attempted to pass a bill that would outlaw abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy.:  It was not just an arbitrary restriction — 20 weeks was chosen because that is when medical professionals believe a fetus has the ability to feel pain.:  Considering that abortions typically involve tearing the fetus apart limb by limb inside the womb, one would think that ensuring that the unborn child, at the least, does not feel pain during this horrific procedure, this is not such an unreasonable restriction.:  Since the trial of Kermit Gosnell, there have also been some revelations about abortion mills in Texas practicing similar horrors.

But despite the reasons for the bill, the Feminazis went ballistic.:  Republicans had the votes to push the bill through, and under Texas Senate rules, they had until midnight to pass the bill, so one Texas Democrat attempted to filibuster — which is fair enough, as the filibuster was within the rules.

But when the filibuster failed with just enough time for the vote to proceed before the midnight deadline, the crowds that had flooded the building became so raucous that the vote could not be taken.:  The deadline passed, and the bill died.:  Texas State Senator Wendy Davis was heralded as a hero by the Left for her filibuster — President Obama’s official Twitter account even tweeted a shout-out reading “Something special is happening in Austin” with a link to live video feed.

You see, when Democrats say “this is what democracy looks like,” they usually aren’t talking about democracy — they’re talking about mob rule.:  It isn’t about the will of the people; it’s about getting what they want.:  It didn’t matter that a moderate, pro-American dictator was running Egypt in the midst of a spate of hardline Islamist uprisings; all that mattered was that the Egyptian people traded a relic of the Bush era for their very own Muslim Brotherhood tin-pot dictator…who cares that it has further destabilized a region heavily depended on by economies across the world?

In the meantime, the U.S. taxpayers have been propping up Egypt’s failing economy, and the Obama administration has provided significant military aid to this regime that seems to be collapsing just two years after Mohamed Morsi was elected as the new president.

President Obama has had a long history of picking losers.:  His stimulus plan didn’t work, his health care plan is bringing the health insurance industry to its knees, his investments in various solar energy companies – all with taxpayer dollars – have fallen through.:  This president doesn’t have a very good record when it comes to picking winners.:  Given how he has already weakened America internationally, we can’t really afford to trust his judgment.
